SHUTDOWN: Obama vows to veto short-term bill

The White House has vowed to veto the short-term spending bill House Republicans will vote on this afternoon, taking away the safety net that could have given both sides another week to avert an immediate government shutdown.

Without a short-term extension, the options would be narrowed to either a broad successful deal or a shutdown as of midnight Friday.

“If presented with this bill, the president will veto it,” the White House said in an official statement of policy.

The House bill would extend the shutdown deadline by another week, to April 15, while funding defense needs for the rest of this year so that troops’ paychecks would not be endangered by a shutdown.

3. Good on him!
This is what I want to see - stop the jib jabber (and for Boehner - the blubber) and get down to work.

10. And government employees
Edited on Thu Apr-07-11 01:04 PM by MissDeeds
who live paycheck to paycheck. I just got a call from a friend who is a divorced mom with two kids and works as an editor in a GS job. Her supervisor called a meeting this morning and told them that if the government is shut down, they probably would not get back pay. She said everyone at work is scared, and worried about how they will pay mortgages, car payments, and meet basic expenses. This is really, really serious.

I understand we need to take a hard line, but many innocent people will be devastated if this happens, especially if it goes on any length of time. What a mess.

21. Back pay will require literally an act of Congress
Historically that has always happened, but I would not be all that confident about it this time around.

22. I agree
What I've been hearing is that the teabaggers will not allow that. When did they get so much power? God, this power play makes me sick. People are just pawns. The powers that be will still get their checks.

8. Would the troop's paychecks be the only part
of the war machine that gets funding in this case, or would every part of war be allowed to continue to thrive? If so, then why is war the most important part of government that needs to be maintained?

Nobody disputes that soldiers deserve their paychecks... but then so does everyone else that is paid by government.

12. Does this mean we don't have to file taxes
on time? But seriously, good for Obama. The GOP is out of control. I feel really sorry for the people this will personally affect though. If I were lucky enough to be selling my place right now (to an FHA buyer) and the government shut down, I'd be really pissed.

16. This is his one chance to dictate terms to the GOP/Tea Party.
Once they shut down the Government he can refuse to sign anything and force them to capitulate on any number of things. The longer this goes on the worse it is for them. Obama has an opportunity to make them beg if he has the balls to use it.
