Shock poll: 46% of Mississippi Republicans think interracial marriage should be illegal
Source: Raw Story
By Stephen C. Webster

new poll out of Mississippi finds that in a bastion of America's south, many Republican voters have tightly held onto the old, hateful views of race as a dividing line in society.

A full 46 percent of Mississippi Republicans said they believe interracial marriage should be illegal, according to the left-leaning survey group Public Policy Polling. Only 40 percent said they thought it should remain legal, with the rest unsure.

Republicans who said they were in favor of banning interracial marriages were most frequently supporters of Fox News contributor Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor (R) who quit half-way through her first term. Their least liked candidate was Mitt Romney, the former radio executive and Governor of Massachusetts (R).

1. Maybe we should send every single republican
to Mississippi and then build a wall around it and let them be their own horrible country.

4. Sorry, no can do
many NOLA people have (or had before Katrina) second homes on the Mississippi coast (which, I might add, is more purplish than the rest of the state).

15. I agree with you there.
I NEVER saw interracial dating my 25 years in Mississippi; interracial marriage was unheard of. I never met a conservative white who wasn't an out-and-out racist, either.

6. What were the results for Dems and Independents?
I didn't see that in the story. Do repubs stand out? If so, why not make it evident?

18. Polling was only for Republicans
This was primarily a Presidential Primary preference survey.

7. People need to hear this stuff.
Too many morons think that racism is a remnant of the past; they have no idea that this sort of attitude is still so prevalent.

8. I am shocked
I didn't think it was that low.

Seriously though, this does not seem to be the norm anywhere else. I see plenty of inter racial couples, some quite old, here in the bible belt.

Racists are dying off. Let them and don't mark their passing.

12. I wonder how racists will feel when they are the minority in this country. I wonder
if the racists expect to be treated as well as they treated people of color.

14. Prior to 1964, many of the southern states had laws that ...
made interracial marriage illegal. My first wife, 1/8 Miami indian, could not, in the 50s, be stationed in those states.

Back in the piney woods, laws don't mean much.

16. One thing that's strange about this poll is the age breakdown.
The youngest group (18-29) is just as right wing as the oldest (>65) and considerably more right wing than the middle-aged groups (30-45 and 46-59). For example, on the interracial marriage question, the youngest group says it should be illegal (54% to 31%) as does the oldest group (56% to 30%), but the middle-aged groups disagree (38% to 48% and 39% to 49%). That's weird. Generally, young people wherever they are tend to more liberal.
