2. statement needs supporting evidence:
"pornography can and often does lead to conduct that threatens the safety and security of co-workers, children, and other individuals."

Even if the above phrase refers only to porn at work (the banning of which I can support), I'd like to know what dangerous conduct the author envisions.

10. Keep in mind that sexual harassment and exposure are safety and security issues.
Edited on Thu Apr-07-11 03:46 PM by Xithras
If another employee walks into your cubicle while you're browsing giantjuggswithextranipples.com, that involuntary exposure may be sexually offensive and contributes heavily to the formation of a hostile work environment. If that coworker walks in while you're wanking your tool to those images, you've just committed a crime that may lead to your prosecution. The presence of porn in the workplace DOES threaten the safety and security of the office.

17. Security I can see - in the legal sense.
Yes, porn in the workplace could trigger harassment claims. But safety? Is anyone's physical safety threatened? Hasty-zipping accidents would be a concern, I guess. Wonder if you can get workman's comp for a zipper-chewed wang?

6. Meh. People masturbate. People look at porn while masturbating.
Edited on Thu Apr-07-11 03:35 PM by Warren DeMontague
As long as everyone is a consenting adult, I have trouble getting wrought out (or, if you will, "hand-wringing") about it. Doesn't mean you should do it at work, of course, unless that happens to already BE your job. (Well shit, some people get paid to play video games, don't they?)

Now, re: Sex offenders and probabtion-- maybe I'm missing something, and I'm sure that there is ironclad scientific evidence that "pornography can and often does lead to conduct that threatens the safety and security of co-workers, children, and other individuals." but in the case of child abusers, wouldn't looking at pictures of ADULT sexuality be a healthy, good, positive sign?

I would think so. Unless the idea is that these people are supposed to be sexless entirely.

8. Companies don't need a usb stick to do this
My current employer uses a realtime traffic scanner. Hit a porn site, and you can expect your boss to be knocking at your door within minutes wanting to know why you're wanking off during work hours.

There should be no expectation of privacy on work computers.

Someone tell me how a program can tell the difference between digital information on a porn jpeg and any other jpeg?

I call bullshit. A machine cannot tell the difference between a picture of me and my wife on vacation and a picture of me and my wife naked in bed. Not that anyone needs to see that shit

Hehe, after reading the link I see I was right. All the thing can do is read headers and tell you if the picture might be porn. LOL, just another smoke screen..

31. Seems rather easy to me...
From the posted link...

It utilizes a sophisticated algorithm to analyze image data and assess flesh tone, color content, image backgrounds, body part shapes and other information which may be indicative of graphic sexual images. The software vendor reports less than a one percent false positive indication.

From another website...

The Porn Detection Stick has implemented a number of methods and algorithms to analyze each image to determine if it may be pornographic in nature. Image Cleanup - within virtual memory, the software cleans up the image for optimum analysis. Skin Detection - this identifies skin tones and texture within the image. Background Elimination - this eliminates background objects from foreground objects so background objects don't skew the results. Edge Detection - identifies the edges of objects. Body Part Separation - separates body parts into separate masses. Negative Curvature Rejection - eliminates objects with negative curves. Elimination - eliminates other objects. Face Detection - identifies faces within the image. Body Part Layout Decision - maps body part distribution and image layout. Decision - classifies image based on data.

http://www.eyespypro.com/products/Paraben-Porn-Detection-Stick.html

Just a quick guess based on your scenario, the software has a set range to identify the color range of "flesh tones". If it detects a predetermined percentage of "flesh tones", it flags it. The pic of you and your wife on vacation might only contain 30% of identifiable "flesh tones", while the nude pics might contain 80% or more. It doesn't have to be 100% reliable... just reliable enough for an employer/examiner to weed out harmless pics and focus on pics that could potentially be pornographic.

that has lots of tans and browns? How does it differentiate? How many flesh tones are in existence? Does this just work for white people? How many people do you know with the exact same flesh tone?

Sorry all you did was prove my point. This is bullshit guesswork. It's a scam. But hey if you feel you need it spend the hundred bucks. Things like this are the reason I'm self employed.

And BTW I for one think surfing porn at work is really dumb.

It's just not worth it, I'm the guy that management calls when someone gets the perp walk, then I have to analyze their computer for evidence. I've used Encase Examiner, FTK and Paraben's Device Seizure, among others...it's amazing (and disturbing) what those tools can uncover.
