the big 3.
Soot traps or diesel regeneration systems on pickup trucks and larger vehicles are an abomination that only Beezelbub could conceive. They have been an constant headache to the auto industry with repetitive failures, shop visits, fires, loss of mileage, etc etc ad nauseum.
I spoke with a man today who has removed his regen system from his pickup truck and installed a Banks system. He has noticed an increase of 6 mpg. His truck registered 1100 foot pounds of torque at the rear wheels on a dyno. This from a 6 cylinder Cummins engine in a Dodge pickup truck.
A couple of years ago on this very board I mentioned that there was a company named Hy-Drive that was making a hydrogen injection system for both gas and diesel vehicles. Claims of increased power and dramatically reduced emissions abounded at that time. This is a simple system that electrolyses water, yes that's water and injects the hydrogen generated into the intake manifold. Some rigs had reported a 60$/day savings in fuel.
It seemed as if Tesla himself was at the helm of this forward thinking company, coming up with answers to pressing environmental problems. At the time, the naysayers and know it alls on this board decided to start with the laws of thermodynamics with the usual mantras, you can't get something for nothing, It would take as much energy to fracture the H2O as you can get out of it, E=Mc2 etc, etc, blah blah.
Recently Caterpillar has gotten out of the over the road trucking industry, seems the emissions thingy has them by the short hairs.
http://fleetowner.com/management/news/cat-first-truck-0321/Why do I mention this? Because it would have been so simple to install a hydrogen injection system on vehicles 2 or 3 years ago and be done with it in a simple and effective manner. Oh wait, did I say simple? That certainly isn't allowed in the ivory towers of machine design.
But wait, yonder comes the budding young engineers with the ability to complicate wet or dry, paper or plastic, simple or mind boggling complicated and fraught with problems. Well they chose mind boggling and fraught with problems and it has cost dearly. My advice to them is get rid of the garbage they are putting on vehicles today, they soot up in applications where long term idling is necessary and they break down without provocation.
There is a phrase that exemplifies the problem succinctly imho, "When I was a child I wanted to be an engineer, now I are one". Hey dudes with the drawing board, there is a simpler way and the sooner you get to it the sooner the headaches you have created will start to diminish.
