Fast-Food Chain Wants to Fill 50,000 Spots on April 19

Philip Birden loves his "McJob." He does everything from working at the cash register to making hash browns at a McDonald's in Chicago. And he has dreams of turning this job into much, much more.

"Your teachers tell you that at the beginning of time -- I remember being in eighth grade -- 'You don't want to work at McDonald's,'" the 20-year-old said. "But when you work here, you'll have a different feeling about working at McDonald's."

This month, McDonald's Corp. hopes to find thousands more like Birden. The company wants to fill 50,000 jobs in one day -- so if you like to smile, enjoy working with customers and are looking for a career, the company wants you to apply April 19.

Jan Fields, president of McDonald's USA, said that the move signaled the Oak Brook, Ill.-based company is in good shape and that officials were confident it would meet the hiring number.....more

These jobs used to be work for high school kids. Now they are apparently the ideal job for the regular family guy or gal.

and b) it would merely reinforce the downward spiral of wages/benefits that most American workers are facing.

16. Give me a break. There is plenty of unhealthy food in home pantrys. And you can.....

eat healthy at McDonald's if you want.

And I GUARANTEE there are many people who would LOVE to have those McDonald's jobs, including my College aged son.

4. I worked part time at Micky D's when my kids were in school

I quite to clean Seniors apartments on my own part time. The the Seniors were nicer and paid better. I even refued to take their money when all they wanted was tea and sympathy. Corporations, and for profit businesses, wouldn't understand this.

I spent more time, FOR FREE, just sitting and talking to them than I did actually cleaning FOR PROFIT.

6. Hey, if you're 19 and a high school dropout ...

it's a way at least to get on your feet and maybe get your GED and go to community college to study, say, to be an x-ray technician or chef or whatever ... after which you may be qualified for a better job.

don't think people are arguing about McDs as a temp job. I think most people don't think of fast food prep as a career because that job in no way pays a career like wage. Now management at a fast place... IDK most people don't make it that far in those jobs. Most people tend to get phased out after a few raises for the cheap new hire.

And I have NO squeamishness crushing bugs and rodents. Oh, and I have a high tolerance for assholes, especially for management types.

Do I have the "right stuff" for McD's? Oh, and just ignore the "Aerospace Engineering" stuff on my resume.

of $32,000 a year.

Reaching management at Jack in the Box was what finally convinced my sister-in-law to apply to nursing school, after having worked fast food for 8 years.
