2. Nearly all SS payments are distributed via direct deposit
Only in certain special cases are they mailed. The process is automated so that the computer just does it!

4. Actually, a lot are still mailed. Mandatory direct deposit is 2013.
So I have had a lot of calls here from people wondering about our checks coming.
My SS check is still mailed.

3. And Congress will still receive their pay checks.
But don't try to go to a national park, or the Smithsonian, or god forbid national zoo (no one will be hauling shit away). It is questionable about whether air traffic controllers would be working. No doubt they will be, but they will not be paid while the government is shut down. Could we be lucky enough to have the TSA workers not working?

5. But the people mailing them might not get a paycheck for a while.
Something to keep in mind next time someone's extolling how wonderfully cushy public service jobs are.

"Essential" employees worked for two months without pay in 1995 and very little thanks.

6. Plus, Military and essential civilians would be paid after shutdown.
"If the government shuts down Friday night, military personnel and civilian personnel deemed essential will continue to work, but the Defense Department will not have the funds to pay them until after the shutdown ends, Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn III said in a message sent to the Pentagon's workforce on Thursday afternoon.

Military personnel are not subject to furlough and will report for duty as normal during any shutdown, along with essential civilian personnel. "

Troops could miss receiving their full pay for the month of April, depending on how long a government shutdown lasts, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told soldiers on Thursday during a visit to Camp Liberty in Baghdad.

What, the banks have not foreclosed on enough houses yet?
A lot of these people are living from paycheck to paycheck.

7. Thanks for remembering. I was one of those "essential" workers
in '95 and worked without a paycheck for a month or so. It looks like I might have to do it again.
