Rand Paul uses toilets to argue Energy Department 'could be gotten rid of'
By Ben Geman - 04/08/11 09:49 AM ET

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is doubling down on his allegation that nanny-state energy policies are screwing up America’s bathrooms.

Paul made waves last month when he lambasted an Energy Department official over various appliance efficiency standards, alleging they restrict consumers and saddle them with ineffective products — including toilets that Paul said don’t work in his house.

He revived the criticism Thursday in an interview on the Fox Business Network, claiming that most of the Energy Department “could be gotten rid of.”

“It interferes with and takes away our choices on what kind of showers we want, what kind of toilets we want. What kind of light bulbs we want. But most of the Department of Energy is an impediment to producing energy. Not one barrel of oil is produced by the Department of Energy. But the Department of Energy stops a lot of oil from being produced,” Paul said.

Paul blasted appliance and lighting efficiency standards at a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing last month, accusing the federal government of a “busybody” nature that’s “insulting.”

“Frankly, my toilets don’t work in my house, and I blame you and people like you who want to tell me what I can install in my house, what I can do; you restrict my choices,” he told Kathleen Hogan, the deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency, at the March 10 hearing.

A 1992 energy law set toilet water efficiency standards of 1.6 gallons per flush.

Paul said at the hearing that he supports energy conservation, but that such efforts should be voluntary.

4. Rand Paul has a serious case of the ass about toilets...
Last month he compared choice in toilets to reproductive choice. This month he's on Faux Business complaining about toilets.

The problem, Rand, is you're so full of shit no toilet in existence could get rid of it all.

8. Botched toilet training?
I recommend he see a specialist about this fixation. Sen. Vitter, perhaps.

5. Hey, I'm all for sending Rand Paul out to clean up Hanford.
He doesn't need that pesky OSHA looking over his shoulder while he does it, either.

6. Why would anyone listen to the opinions of a man...
...who can't even keep the toilets in his own house in functioning order?

I mean, talk about skewed priorities! If I lived with someone like that, I'd give him the boot!

7. Rand Paul: Knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing
In Randworld, the highest and best use of fresh water is flushing away his feces. If it requires 10 gallons, so be it. He's willing to pay to use all that water,* so he should be able to use as much as he wants to flush his toilet. The notion that by consuming 10 gallons of water to flush his toilet means 8.4 gallons less for folks to drink or wash or clean is immaterial, because Rand is willing to pay to use 10 gallons. And, even though water is a finite resource we all share, it's an unconscionable infringement on Rand's personal liberty to limit the amount of water he can use to flush his shit away.

In times past, we used to call folks like Mr. Paul nincompoops. Nowadays, thanks the influence of the Fox network and the gullibility of Hilltopper voters, we get to call him Senator. This passes for progress in some circles.

*As a utility, the cost of water is tightly controlled, but let us not sully Rand's rugged libertarian individualism by mentioning that point.

11. Interesting...
You know, personally I think we could make even better use of toilets. We could take pieces of shit like Rand Paul and flush them down the hole where they belong.
