State moves forward with sale of 5 Ohio prisons
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's prisons department is moving forward with its plan to sell five state prisons to private operators.
The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction began the bidding process for the facilities on Friday. The sale could generate $200 million for the state at a time it's facing an estimated $8 billion budget shortfall.

Department spokesman Carlo LoParo says about 767 state prison workers should be expecting layoff notices from the sale of the Grafton Correctional Institution in Grafton and North Central Correctional Institution in Marion. Buyers would have to give preference to existing employees when hiring.

2. This is wrong on so many levels it almost defies description...
...selling state assets.

...turning around and renting those same assets.

...privatizing the jobs

...reducing oversight on prison operations

I'm sure DU'er can quickly add to this list.

Wonder how much $$$ the buyers put into Kasich's campaign, ala Jan Brewer?

3. I find this disturbing...when the state takes away your rights because you committed a crime...
...against the state, and thusly the people, then only the state should imprison you.

Turning you over to a private corporation is not the proper recourse, and sends mixed messages...

4. Ohio
is lost. If I lived there I would try to get out. Pretty soon judges will be locking people up( as many as they can) for kick backs.

5. Wait????I thought the mandate was to CREATE jobs???
"767 state prison workers should be expecting layoff notices"

And sure...they can re-apply for their jobs. But they ALL lose their tenure. They all lose their pensions...and I would bet a dollar to a dime they are going to be MUCH lower paying jobs.

10. actually I don't have a problem with inmate labor ...
I worked 10 years in the NC state prison system ....
we had road crews ... picking up litter ...
we had guys that worked with DOT ...
we had guys that worked in the wood shop making furniture for state offices desks/book cases etc
we had guys that did grounds and maintenance work both at the prison and at schools when students were not there ..
we had guys that did HVAC work as well as cooking school ....
all of this saved the state tons of money and in some cases gave the guys a skill to use
when they got out ....

11. Yet where are those 767 workers and their families and friends?
Are they in the streets?
Are they striking now while they still can?

When we meekly accept the shit dumped on us from the oligarchs, we are done.

7. Will they bill the state for lost revenue with each early parole?
Or simply lobby to outlaw it altogether?

9. This isn't good ....
NC has a couple of private prisons ... they are not run as well as state run prisons ...
in one case the state had to step in and take over one of them ....
they mix custody grades which is a no no ...
like mixing murderers and someone who wrote some bad checks
together ...
This really isn't good .....

12. A privately run prison in our state came to be known as "Gladiator School"
Because of the amount of violence, often overlooked or even enabled by guards.
