Republicans don't care about collateral damage
That is why the keep winning these battles. They don't care who would be damaged with a government shutdown. They didn't care what would happen if we didn't pass the START treaty last December. Not caring gives them power and enables them to extort huge
concessions from the Democrats who do care. It is like negotiating with terrorists who threaten to blow up countless people if they don't get their demands met.

2. You are right. Which Democrat is much better. Which Democrats
are willing to go to the country and make the case
for a Democratic Party Philosphy and explain to
the country in exact terms why the Democrats have
the better ideas. NOT ONE DEMOCRAT.

It is apparently easier to cave and hurt their own.
This is what they do all the time.

3. Howard Dean. Bernie Sanders.
But Dean has been sidelined by the Democratic Party (why??), and Sanders is an independent.
