I think what was gained in these budget cuts was a good discussion of what Planned Parenthood is. Kudos to our liberal and fact-telling pundits.
I do think Planned Parenthood needs to reframe itself as THE LOW and NO-cost health care plan that millions of women, men and families have used over many years. It's helped keep families healthy, living within their means by helping plan when to have children and how many. It's seen all the people who would have had otherwise gone through Medicare for these services. It's actually been one of the most successful money-saving and health-saving organizations in so many ways in this country and should get lauded by anyone with a brain and a voice. It's safe, confidential and inexpensive. The government gives very little money for their health services in comparision with the great amount offered.
I grew up in a time when there was a stigma in seeking birth control at a younger age and when there was little sex and reproduction information, and little info about diseases being taught, outside a video and pamphlet in schools. Planned Parenthood was there, when not much else was. Most parents had no idea how to talk about reproduction, love, self-esteem, diseases and prevention etc. Fortunately now, younger people know about PP, through the education classes offered by PP, especially important in light of the cuts to school sex ed programs. They know where to be tested for diseases, pap, mammograms and even blood pressure, cholesterol etc. and be able to talk with a doctor about their concerns. They know they can get the facts, without embarrassment, from professionals.
The stigma is gone, but uneducated people remain.
From the PP website, this is what PP does.
