The relationship between wanting to end funding for Planned Parenthood and the overall budget
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 12:45 PM by Tony_FLADEM
I've written about this before but I want to mention it again since it was demonstrated by the Republicans once again.

Some people don't understand why the Republicans made a big issue about the $300 million given to Planned Parenthood in the context of an overall budget of 3+ trillion.

It's very simple. I know this money doesn't go to abortion services, but their voters believe that it does.

Being against money going to abortion allows them to be perceived as moral and compassionate which allows them to not be these things on other issues related to money and the economy.

Paul Ryan proposing to slash spending for those who are elderly and the most in need of Medical Care (Medicaid recipients) so those who have the most can get a tax cut is immoral and not compassionate. So they used this $300 million which goes to Planned Parenthood to make up for it.

I wish more people saw the connection.

1. Or how about this

They slide a big stack of chips out on the table, play the hand a bit, and pull them back. Now you can say you "saved" Planned Parenthood and it only cost $500 Billion over the next 10 years.

2. Absolutely

The abortion issue is a chump issue. it is simplistic. People disapprove and feel morally superior for it but it does not entail the ramifications of making it illegal - unwanted children, illegal abortions etc.

Then when it comes to cutting those things that are often needed to support those very mothers and children, there are no qualms about cutting.

Being self righteous feels good and so does ignornance. Punishing women for having sex is part of it too.

3. agreed, also...
just how much money is donated to the republicans by pro-life "christian" groups all over the country, as well as other backward-thinking knuckle draggers.

I've always believed that a lot of these pricks aren't really pro-life at all, they just use that platform to receive money and campaign donations.

I'd like to see just how much money is donated purely due to the abortion issue. Is there a way we could look that up?

4. I was thinking along a similar line.
They play up to their anti-choice base by threatening to de-fund Planned Parenthood, while their true goal is to reduce spending in order to give bigger tax cuts to the wealthy. I don't believe they are passionate, one way or the other, about Planned Parenthood.
