A Little Respite. The Decorah Eagle Babies Are Getting Bigger!
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 12:56 PM by OmmmSweetOmmm
Mom is with them now. It's been a couple of days since I've looked in on them and I can't believe how much larger the babies have become!

So if you need to a respite from all the political drama, visiting this remarkable family might be a good outlet!!!

EnJoy!!!

BTW..both parents tend to the babies and after reading the Q&A at the link, you can tell the difference between Mom and Dad two ways. The Mom is bigger and the Dad looks like he's wearing black eyeliner!

1. The largest of the three is beginning to attack the two smaller ones when mom is away.
Apparently the dominant, usually female baby, will attack and often kill the other babies. They definitely are growing though quite a bit, and within 13 weeks they will be ready to leave the nest.

I'm hooked on this site! :-)

3. According to the Q&A, the mated pair have had excellent results in raising
their babies from hatching to fledged, and not one of their babies has died yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they hold a perfect record with these three.

I am addicted too! :)

4. Definitely will be interesting to see how this works out, because the one clearly dominant baby
is beating up on the two smaller ones pretty often now.

3rd was hatched, and the little one looked like it was dead. I then read on a DU thread that the little ones will go into submissive positions.

I mentioned this on other eagle threads, that this has clearly defined where the term "pecking order" came from. It really is the survival of the fittest, where the older, larger sibling gets stronger first and will make sure that it receives as much food as possible...I just hope that Mom and Dad will keep them well enough fed that they all live. It also helps that there right near a trout farm! :)

9. It seems, that at least for now, when the bigger goes to pick on the smaller ones, the mom steps in
and it stops! Good mommy!!!

8. Flies! Flies! Flies!
Damn Flies keep bugging either mom or dad. With all those dead carcases around it's a buffet for the flies too.
