Father grabs man who tried to grab her daughter, body slams him, puts him in headlock
Oregon Teen Says Father Saved Her From Sex Offender

Published April 09, 2011

MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- A Milwaukie teen says a man, later found to be a sex offender, tried to grab her while she was walking home from school Thursday evening.

Luckily, her father quickly came to the rescue and tackled the suspect, Fox12 News reports.

Police cited Douglas Quinn and are charging him with harassment.

Shelby Harrington, 13, says Quinn approached her asking for her name and then tried to grab her by the shoulder.

She was able to get away and use her cell phone to call her dad. That’s when the two started driving around the area looking for the suspect on their own. A few blocks away, they spotted him.

-------------------------------

“I grabbed him, body slammed him and put him in a nice headlock and waited till the deputies showed up,” Brett Harrington, the teen's dad, told Fox12 News.

1. I can't say I blame him.
She's very lucky to get away from that creep.

50. martial arts are good, but they're no panacea
especially when there's a significant size/strength differential. The most important thing to draw from self defense training is situational awareness. The best way to win a fight is making sure it never happens.

20. Misidentification by victims is a huge problem in our justice system
This could have been another black man of similar size and appearance who happened to be walking in the neighborhood.

When I read the subject line, I thought the father saw it happening and went into action, and I thought this was a happy ending. The fact that they drove around until she identified a man as her attacker changes my reaction.

28. With equally sincere respect to you, the facts presented in the story tell me he was id'd correctly.
I don't need to wait for a trial to form an opinion - that's sorta what we do on these discussion boards. Until I am presented with evidence to the contrary, I maintain, based upon what we know now, that the victim's account of the story was and is correct. Thanks.

32. Based upon the facts presented in the story, we most certainly do. If new facts emerge that
contradict that narrative, then I will reassess my opinion of what occurred during this incident.

In the meantime, I'll side with the victim's account of what happened. You're free to believe whatever you wish. Win/Win.

36. They sure do - that, and the fact Quinn turned out to be a registered sex offender. At this time,
those facts stand undisputed.

Thanks for reiterating them and conceding that they are, indeed, the facts as we currently understand them - glad to see you're coming around, at last.

could mean anything from being caught taking a piss on the side of a road, to more horrendous things. I have trouble with an 18 year sleeping with his 17 year girlfriend being in the same category as a rapist or child molester.

and I promise you, if the facts referred to in the article are even vaguely true, I much admire the restraint shown by the father.

In no way am i trying to lessen the damage even an attempted sexual assault inflicts.

47. ok, I'll give you that.
I do know in NC not really a Liberal state (though we did vote Obama, Hell Ya), there is a graduated limit. I think it is 18 for 15, 19 for 16, 20, for 17. Don't quote me on that but I'm pretty sure thats how it stands, not sure for other states.

8. What I find so disturbing
Is how powerful the drive is to repeat this behavior. We recently had a case here in CA where an offender tried to rape a child in the aisle of a Dollar Store. I know progressives are not happy about the "throw away the key" mentality, but there is a hard core of sex offenders who should just not be let out.

11. I;m not sure
And you have to differentiate. For example, I don't think an 18 who has an affair with a 16 ought to be placed on the sex offenders list and have their lives ruined. That's judgment, not compulsion. But in the cases that were cited, the rate of recidivism is like the 90% you mentioned.

They are the predator class and probably the most dangerous toward children/pre-teen/teens.

18. me too
I'm not liberal when it comes to liberty for sex offenders.. animal abusers too, these are two traits that mean a person is trouble. It bothers the hell out of me that so many people are walking around free who've committed such crimes.

Our numbers in prison are just ridiculous though, and I guess I don't know the solution. No, I am not progressive or liberal when it comes to these types of criminals.

27. Yeah.
Clinical pedophilia, along with all the axis II cluster B personality disorders, is effectively incurable. the drive really never really goes away, and all one can do is attempt to curb behavior.

I don't know if there's an easy answer regarding what to do with the most afflicted of these patients. Many of the things we take to "universally" apply to humans do not apply to them (see e.g. the psychopath's utter lack of moral consciousness). Lifelong commitment certainly is an ugly solution, but short of designating them their own island I don't know what one can really do.

35. heh -- my stepdad took it a step further
I was walking home when a guy on the phone (in a phone booth) opened the door and started talking some really nasty shit at me. I booked it on home - half a block away. My stepdad was told about it, he asked me to show him who it was. The guy was STILL on the phone.

Stepdad pulled the door around, and stuck a gun in the guy's mouth. He then asked the guy if he was leaving town soon. I couldn't hear the answer (it was muffled by the gun), but he wet himself, hung up the phone and got into his truck, just as a cop car was cruising by.

The cops came to our house, and asked my SD about it. They both knew him personally, and were close to giggling when they asked him if he'd -really- stuck a gun in the guy's mouth. He of course, denied it. But they did take my complaint about the guy's obscene language.

Turns out this guy was also a sex offender. But he left the State suddenly. Wonder why?

45. About 25 years ago in the OC
We were watching the 11PM news and they had a story on a girl''s father stopping an attack on his daughter in their home.

They interview the father (a big dude) and he calmly states he heard a noise and went to his daughters room while his wife called 911. He said he saw the intruder pushed him away and got his daughter and waited for the cops. The reporter ends the story by saying the intruder is in custody at the County Hospital.

Couple days later the story comes out in the paper, the guy threw the intruder from the second floor down to the tile entryway on the ground level, concussion, broken pelvis, leg and wrist.
