A Wisconsin wildlife cam...
No joke and this is not about the ballot counting.

Four video cameras down in the Wolf River in Wisconsin. Click on any of the 4 bars on the map of Wisconsin to select a cam --> http://wolfrivercam.com/WolfRiverCam.html

But this is my favorite view and full screen is great! --> http://wolfrivercam.com/Shiocton%20Cam%202.html

A friend said she saw a pike swim past. Those guys can get up to about 5 feet across and over 50 pounds.

1. I wish there was some indication of scale....
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 03:50 PM by mike_c
I just saw a fish swim past the camera but I don't know if it was six inches long or two feet. :-(

Just saw more. Trout?

3. I've seen some leaves float past the camera so if you see them you can figure the scale
I checked a fishing report for the Wolf River and walleyes can be caught. Those can grow to 31 inches long and weigh 20 pounds according to Wiki. So we're seeing some large fish on this cam.

Also, a friend said she saw a pike swim past and those are quite large.

4. I saw a while bunch of fish swim by a bit ago - one after the other
The water got pretty turbulent a while back. I'll have to check the weather reports to see what's going on up there.

9. Your welcome! I found it by chance
I was looking for a cam I watched last summer. It's a cam that someone set up at a creek bank at the edge of their property. We watched raccoons and all sorts of small wildlife. Not many viewers so the conversations in the chat were fun.

Anyhow, when I was looking for a "river cam", this one popped up in Google. They also have a Ustream page but it's in color and the details are very hard to see. These b&w cams are much clearer.

17. I live 30 miles from the cam and fish the river very often...
The Wolf River cam is in a location just down river from the primary spawning grounds for Walleyes. The fish travel upstream 60-100 miles from Wisconsin's biggest lake, Lake Winnebago, to do their business. Many of the fish going by are walleyes, but you'll also see many resident river fish like smallmouth bass, carp, and redhorse. Walleyes are easy to identify with their characteristic white tip of the tail. Most are between 18"-20" but some of the bigger females will be closer to 30" and 10lbs.

In about 3 weeks, the sturgeon will be on their spawning run and the camera action is far more exciting. Lake Winnebago is home to the world's largest and healthiest self-sustaining lake sturgeon population. Sadly, the sturgeon in most of world's waters have been grossly over-harvested but, fortunately, we have a fantastic population. The sturgeon will live to 100+ years and grow in excess of 200lbs.

19. Thanks for the information
I've saved this link and will be going back a lot. I'm fascinated even when no fish are in view. Catching sight of leaves as they go by is nice since you can judge the turbulence of the water.

Do you think that the glow in the upper left corner is a hole in ice? A little while ago someone was lowering a small platform with a mast and they kept lowering and pulling it up by a rope. It looked like a device was attached to the platform - perhaps another camera. It was in this cam location. http://wolfrivercam.com/Shiocton%20Cam%202.html
Now I'm sorry that I didn't grab a screen capture of it.

27. The ice has been gone for a couple of weeks.
I was fishing on the river last weekend and will be out there tomorrow (but far down river from the Shiocton cam).

I have no idea what you may have seen but your guess that they were maintaining the camera is probably a good guess. The current is pretty strong right now so the cameras get jostled out of place pretty frequently.

18. Those big ones that appear in groups look like carp to me
Carp usually gather in schools or pods.

Though I did see a couple of walleyes a minute ago on Shiocton #2, as they have distinctive white tips on the fin at the bottom/back.

I grew up back there.

Way cool.
