Yesterday, the History Channel showed back to back episodes of a terrorists setting off a 10 megaton nuc in Washington, DC and a pandemic with 80% death rate. In both episodes references were made to "we are but 9 meals from anarchy". The pandemic led to complete social collapse. With continuing deaths resulting from thirst, starvation and crime. New Orleans started breaking down on the third day after Katrina.
Are you prepared if something were to happen?

If the water is cut off, you have between 35 and 80 gallons in your water heater at any given time.

5. For me and my family... |

...1-year.
Enough to go from the end of one growing season the the end of the next.
Plenty of water, heat and shelter. With about 180 days of fuel (propane and gasoline) at 1-hour per day run for the generator for shower.
Hot running water is my measure of civilization, along with clean toilets.

One of DU's biggest 9/11 anticonsipracy theorists is completely prepared for Armageddon. Now that's funny.
P.S. I'm not disparaging you or your viewpoint - you've made many good points in the 9/11 forum.

I simply have lots of ammo as you never know when that might be useful, normal tools for construction and repair I use all the time, and knowledge about how to build or repair just about anything. Hey, I was a boy scout.
I have no special plans or bunkers in case a zombie hoard come strolling down the street. I don't live in an urban area. There were not even local police until a few years ago. There are far more guns and cows where I live than people.

We've been hearing about these apocalyptic scenarios for a couple of generations now.
I'm of the mindset that if nukes were all that easy to get and detonate, it would have happened long since. If deadly plagues were simple to engineer and set loose, that likewise would have happened.
We have a LOT more to fear from the increasing inequality in this country, the coming gutting of the entire social contract.

Because no one's 'compound' is mob proof...the apocolypse scenario is unsustainable. People will want calm in short order. Life is too fragile.
