Walgreens Corrects Fox & Friends: We Don't Offer Pap Smears

Walgreens Corrects Fox & Friends: We Don't Offer Pap Smears

April 11, 2011 11:09 am ET by Eric Hananoki

On Saturday's Fox & Friends, co-hosts Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade attempted to dismiss the importance of Planned Parenthood funding by claiming that services like pap smears are available "at Walgreens." In response to an email about the segment, a Walgreens spokesperson told Media Matters that they do not offer such services.

The Fox News hosts' remarks came during a discussion of the debate over federal funding to Planned Parenthood. During the budget showdown, Republicans attempted to remove federal funding for the women's health group. Planned Parenthood defenders, such as Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid, have argued that the funding is necessary because it goes to "clinics that provide services like cancers tests that save women's lives and save money down the road by catching diseases that are expensive to treat."

On April 9, Doocy and Kilmeade responded to Reid by dismissing Planned Parenthood services:

STEVE DOOCY: And the thing about it that was audacious was the fact that he was talking about Planned Parenthood being this great provider where women can get blood pressure checks, and pap smears, and breast --

BRIAN KILMEADE: Which you can get at Walgreens.

DOOCY: --examinations. Exactly right.

Sadly, Walgreens also does not offer brain transplants.

3. Do they think women pull into Walgreens and spread em?
You would think the dimwit women on that show would know what it takes for such procedure. I am a man and know enough to understand it isn't done in a drugstore clinic.

4. sorry, but that vision made me laugh!
Pull up to the drive thru, honk your horn and two stirrups come sliding out of the counter below the sliding window. Just open the car door and slide your feet in. Alrighty now.

Everyone call Walgreens today and ask to schedule your pap smear. Then don't forget to tell them you heard it on FOX news.

Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 10:45 AM by JohnnyRingo
They're gonna catch that guy one of these days though.

How can anyone watch this show and expect any credibility? That was the main focus of the SNL skit this weekend when Fred Amisted parodied their hapless and disinterested fact checker.

How often do viewers get fired up about something they saw on F&F, then later learned it was nonsense? After a while I'd think they'd find another source, even if it's on the same network.

You can get treated for colds, flu, and other minor ailments. But they sure as hell don't do pap smears, breast exams, and etc. and even if they did it is NOT cheap.

FOX news makes a point to hire the dumbest people available, don't they?

I said, I just heard on Fox News that Walgreens does pap smears and I don't have insurance and need a place like that. Se referred me to their Illinois stores, where I found this:

34. And who do you think Fox will listen to?
My email or Walgreens being interrupted over and over with these calls and complaining to Fox? Sit back and complain when people take action that you don't agree with. If you'd like I'l check with you before I take any personal actions on things in case you don't agree with it.

I talked to ONE employee!!!! one one one
Please tell me you are not defending Fox News

And at the very least, at least one employee (one other U.S. worker) knows that Fox is saying this. Getting the message out any way you can is what I've been reading here.

35. Well if you read the OP, Walgreens knows about this
Media Matters has contacted them.

I worked retail for years. Those employees have enough to do without having to take silly phone calls. That's not activism. Call Fox and waste THEIR time if you want to do something that matters.

30. Good comment re: the brain transplants!
They probably know exactly what they are saying, what is accurate, and what is not. For them, the point is to develop popular narrative, not scrupulous fact checking and reporting.
