Egypt Sentences Blogger to 3 Years
By LIAM STACK and ETHAN BRONNER

CAIRO — An Egyptian blogger was sentenced Monday to three years in prison for criticizing the military in what human rights advocates called one of the more alarming violations of freedom of expression since a popular uprising led to the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak two months ago.

The blogger, Maikel Nabil, 26, had assailed the Egyptian armed forces for what he called its continuation of the corruption and anti-democratic practices of Mr. Mubarak. Mr. Nabil often quoted from reports by established human rights groups.

“Maikel is the first prisoner of conscience in Egypt after the revolution,” Adel Ramadan, one of his lawyers, said in a telephone interview. “This ruling is a warning to all journalists, bloggers and human rights activists in Egypt that the punishment for criticizing the army is a sentence in a military prison.”

Mr. Ramadan said that a military tribunal had sentenced Mr. Nabil to serve his term in Tora Prison here. His lawyers and his family were barred from communicating with him after the sentencing.

3. depends...do the folks on facebook and twitter say its less fucked?
On a serious note; things like this were bound to happen. I think anyone who understands the country and continent expected things like this to happen. Only fools caught up in hype expected democracy overnight. It'll be a long hard road to true democracy, but that road had to start with Mubarak's ouster.

4. Anyone who's been following the news out of Egypt for the last couple of weeks
realizes that things haven't improved. I don't expect democracy right away. I pretty much expected this. And Mubarak's ouster only counts as a beginning if conditions improve and certain institutions begin the process of reform. They haven't and they haven't.

5. It's almost impossible to tell how things will turn out in Egypt.
There was a lot of optimism after the uprising there. Some of it may have been misplaced. In fact, I expect that will end up being the case.

6. It is a Transitional Government
Elections are scheduled. It is too soon to judge a system that isn't even in place.
