A pro-business, anti-government group known as Americans for Prosperity plans to launch a campaign Monday to oppose a new publicly owned bridge to Canada.
The group is a Michigan chapter of a nationwide group founded by former Texas congressman Dick Armey, a conservative Republican who had promoted various tea party efforts.
Jake Davison, a spokesman for the Michigan chapter of Americans for Prosperity, said details will be unveiled Monday about the campaign against the New International Trade Crossing, the publicly owned bridge project formerly known as the Detroit River International Crossing, including which specific tactics will be used and "what lawmakers and districts will be targeted."

Americans for Prosperity receives a major portion of its funding from the Koch brothers, oil billionaires who have bankrolled anti-regulation and tea party events and organizations, according to a variety of media accounts.

While opinions on the bridge project are fiercely partisan in Lansing, support is more broad-based the further one moves away from Michigan’s Capitol Building. GOP stalwarts like Brooks Patterson and John Engler back the NITC/DRIC, as do business interests like the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Amway, and auto industry leaders like Ford Chairman Bill Ford.
Even Ohio Republicans, like then-state Senator and current Kasich Administration appointee Steve Buehrer, publicly urged their Michigan colleagues to support the DRIC last year.
Now, with Republican Governor Rick Snyder as the bridge’s chief Michigan advocate and the promise of $2 billion in federal road money leveraged by the project, keeping legislative Republicans unified in opposition promises to be a tougher task.
The Americans for Prosperity campaign will, no doubt, send a message to Republicans in the state House and Senate: Support the NITC/DRIC and potentially face the tea party’s wrath. That’s no empty threat. For whatever else you may think about the tea party, a ham sandwich can win a Republican primary with their support. Just ask Mike Castle.
