Woman dead after cosmetic surgery done in back of a tile business
Vegas woman dies after backroom cosmetic surgery

With her smooth skin and wavy, honeyed hair, Elena Caro was celebrated as a beauty by her husband and teenage daughter, who often told her that she didn't need cosmetic surgery.

But at 42, Caro wanted firmer skin and a younger figure, so she secretly booked an appointment with a medical office recommended by a close friend.

The quest for perfection might have ended her life, police said.

Caro was found walking the streets of Las Vegas in agony Saturday after buttocks enhancement surgery that authorities say was performed by two Colombian nationals in the back room of a tile business.

She was pronounced dead minutes later at North Vista Hospital in North Las Vegas. Her cause of death was not immediately determined, pending toxicology tests and an investigation.

1. Body dysmorphic disorder From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Body dysmorphic disorder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) (previously known as dysmorphophobia<1> is sometimes referred to as body dysmorphia or dysmorphic syndrome<2>) is a (psychological) somatoform disorder in which the affected person is excessively concerned about and preoccupied by a perceived defect in his or her physical features (body image).

The sufferer may complain of several specific features or a single feature, or a vague feature or general appearance, causing psychological distress that impairs occupational and/or social functioning, sometimes to the point of severe depression and anxiety, development of other anxiety disorders, social withdrawal or complete social isolation, and more.<3> It is estimated that 1–2% of the world's population meet all the diagnostic criteria for BDD (Psychological Medicine, vol. 36, p. 877).

The exact cause(s) of BDD differ(s) from person to person. However, most clinicians believe it could be a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors from their past or present. Abuse and neglect can also be contributing factors.<4><5>

Onset of symptoms generally occurs in adolescence or early adulthood, where most personal criticism of one's own appearance usually begins, although cases of BDD onset in children and older adults are not unknown. BDD is often misunderstood to affect mostly women, but research shows that it affects men and women equally.<6>

The disorder is linked to significantly diminished quality of life and can be co-morbid with major depressive disorder and social phobia, also known as chronic social anxiety. With a completed-suicide rate more than double that of major depression (three to four times that of manic depression) and a suicidal ideation rate of around 80%, extreme cases of BDD linked with dissociation can be considered a risk factor for suicide; however, many cases of BDD are treated with medication and counseling.<7>

A person with the disorder may be treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. Research has shown cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to be effective in treating BDD.<8>

BDD is a chronic illness, and symptoms are likely to persist, or worsen, if left untreated.

3. Maybe they forgot the grouting.

Why can't people just be what they are ? There's another post elsewhere about people being bleached to make their skin whiter. It what people are inside which counts.

7. More than that, I think.
Some psychological dysfunction, and too much social pressure. It is very sad for her and her family.

18. I don't wish anyone to suffer this
but I really think we need to educate people and people have got to stop blindly believing everything they see on TV and read in People magazine.

6. for many women, their only source of feelings of power, effectiveness come from beauty
Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 05:48 PM by BlancheSplanchnik
In a shallow society that values women for their looks, is it any wonder many are as shallow and desperate as many men who find their only power/effectiveness in their career/earnings?

It's a sad lesson drummed into women that they are only valid, as human beings as long as they are hot and sexy.

Many many women have never found a sense of success and creativity other than in their ability to attract sexualized attention.

It angers me to see that women's contributions to the world (other than as beautiful objects) are largely ignored. Instead, to be considered worthy of any notice at all, we must be young and attractive--and then in the perfect Catch 22, we (often all of us women) are called stupid and vain as onlookers judge them for what? For being immersed in the twisted values system that they live in?

11. If only there had been a red flag to indicate they were not legitimate!
Plastic surgery at a tile business? Nope. That sounds like a good combination. How was she supposed to know that was not a winning combination?

16. I feel for her
Society pressures her
Money is tight
Americans always want the easy way out

This is not a real shocker. Yes she's responsible. Yes it should be seen as a stupid decision. I know. But she was a human being, did what she thought would make her better - sadly.

I just see both sides, - all I'm really saying, and that it's sad in many ways I guess.

15. How can people be so stupid?
This reminds me of the http://news.myjoyonline.com/health/201102/60931.asp">girl who died a couple of months ago when she underwent a "procedure" in a hotel.

Here's a hint: if your "doctor" tells you the procedure will be performed anywhere other than a publicly verifiable surgical facility, e.g. a hotel or tile shop, turn around and run.

If nothing else, for educational assistance. It appears the public needs to be educated to the dangers.
