3rd time an Applebee's has served a child alcohol
Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 05:29 PM by RamboLiberal
It's the third time an Applebee's has faced this situation. In 2006, a New York Applebee's admitted to accidentally serving a 5-year-old an alcoholic drink instead of applejuice. And in 2007, a California Applebee's served a toddler a margarita in a covered plastic sippy cup.

10. Put words in people's mouths much?
And you are perfect and have never made an honest mistake?

From what I understood there were 3 incidents at 3 different locations in 3 different years. While hardly ideal, these are busy places which have staff under pressure and running around like crazy from what I have seen in an Applebees. I don't see a pattern of neglect or abuse, I see people that are not perfect human beings making mistakes.

11. Honest mistake? A margarita in a sippee cup????
If that's a mistake, that's a really, really HUGE one. Let's see, I have to get the tequila and the mix, the salt, and oh shit, where are the glasses ... hell, here's a sippee cup. I'll just use that.

21. The kid could've died
This is a chain. When it happened the first time Applebee's management should've made the change in their bottling of the 2 products so it was impossible for any bartender or wait staff to ever mix up the products again.

Amazing so many DU'ers call this a simple accident.

Are you all this blase about food handling safety?

It's just an accident that raw chicken dripped on your salad greens & gave you food poisoning and perhaps killed you.

22. Ever work in a Restaurant?
Or anywhere in the food business?

Do you have any idea how many units Applebee's has or the number of employees? Think you can create a "perfect" environment?

Never made an honest mistake (which is a question you seem to avoid)?

Yes, Applebees should be perfect and they perhaps should have made some corrections if in fact the reports of the first 2 incidents actually went to the corporate offices as they should have done, but can you prove that they did? Can you prove that procedures were not instituted at those stores where the incidents happened to prevent them from happening in the future? Yes, it should be investigated and they need company wide procedures now, but jeepers these folks are human.

26. Gee I posted one of the incidents previously
That means it was a national story. That means corporate should have well known. Bet there were lawyers involved in all 3 incidents.

Yes I've made honest mistakes. But any industry has to work to make sure those "honest mistakes" don't injure/kill someone.

I shoot handguns. That means I have to be very aware an "honest mistake" could easily kill/maim myself or someone around me.

3. One time is an accident - after that procedures need to be changed
in marking bottles or ensuring the non-alcohol drinks cannot inadvertently be mixed up with the alcohol drinks.

Haven't read of this happening at other chains.

It was a mistake. Shit happens. The kid is not going to drink it after tasting it. What's the big deal?

32. In one of the previous incidents...
Alcohol was stored in a container that looked very much like the container used to store apple juice. So I'm guessing in this case, the employee most likely knew the order was going to a child, but didn't know what was in the container he was filling it with.

6. It's probably not the only place goofing up, either
Alcohol doesn't taste good, which is why most people mix it with stuff to get it down. Most kids would make a face and refuse to drink much of any alcoholic stuff served to them, with the possible exception of beer (which I loved when I was a kid, a juice glass of it at a time). French kids are introduced to a mixture of wine and water as soon as they can manage a glass.

While Applebee's needs to examine their procedures (the margarita in a sippy cup looking less like a mistake than that mislabeled bottle in the second incident), this is a tempest in a teapot.

7. This sentence at the end of the article sort of freaked me out:
"Police in Detroit said this latest incident was accidental."
Are they saying, then, that the first two incidents were not accidental?

12. I once asked for water in a resturant
And got a tall ice filled glass of straight gin. Figgured that one out on the first gulp! I should have asked for a strainer, martini glass and olive to go with it.

Bartender was horrified. It was a complete accident, they happen when humans are involved.

them shut up, and not squawking and disturbing the other dinners.
Haven't you guys ever been to AppleBees? It's a very dignified place. Only the kids are drunk.

Having trouble working up a head of rage over this one. Maybe if they were all the same specific restaurant.

30. Pretty much, yeah
One instance of something like that every year and a half from a national chain? That's miniscule.

Anyone who expects 100% perfect absolute safety with no exceptions for anything is an idiot.
