WASHINGTON – The grueling 2011 budget debate that brought the federal government to the brink of a shutdown might end up looking mild in the face of the next fiscal battle: the debt ceiling. That's because Republicans are openly threatening to use the calamitous possibility of a U.S. default as leverage to exact major spending cuts from Democrats.

"The president says, 'I want you to send me a clean bill.' Guess what, Mr. President. Not a chance you're going to get a clean bill," said House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), the most powerful Republican in D.C., at a fundraiser this weekend. "There will not be an increase in the debt limit without something really, really big attached to it."

6. And, if the U.S. defaults (which has never happened)
Our nation's credit rating takes a dive, and we're automatically on the hook for billions more just to service our debt. This is why we can't even feed our own citizens; we have to pay our creditors more, thanks to Republican shenanigans. But heaven forfend anyone actually say such a dastardly thing! Because that would be non-bipartisan.

9. This is the kind of situation
where the phrase "sink or swim" comes from. Obama presents his plan, stands by it and the debt ceiling is not raised and then we are told we will sink. Or, he caves in and it's more of the same old bullswaggle. Or, he stands by it and the repubs cave in and we swim. And I wonder if we really would sink of that debt ceiling isn't raised. With so many other countries in such a financial mess, it may be a none event.

16. Call their bluff. They won't do it.
Not because they give a shit about this country, but because the value of THEIR HOLDINGS -- i.e., T-Bills -- would plummet.

They won't do it. But if Obama caves, I swear to God I'll never vote for him again. Swear. To. God.
