'Mother Earth' to be given same rights as humans under UN plan

Treaty: Bolivian President Evo Morales wants the UN to recognize the Earth as a living entity
Bolivia is drawing up a draft UN treaty which would give Mother Earth the same rights as humans, including the right to life, to pure water and clean air.

The South American country wants the UN to recognize the Earth as a living entity that humans have sought to 'dominate and exploit'.

It aims to establish 11 new rights for nature which include: the right to life and to exist; the right to continue vital cycles and processes free from human alteration; the right to pure water and clean air; the right to balance; the right not to be polluted; and the right to not have cellular structure modified or genetically altered.

Bolivia's large indigenous population is ruled by Latin America's first indigenous president Evo Morales, who was elected in 2006.

2. It's about time the rights of our planet are recognized.
She isn't here just to be exploited by the likes of BP and all the other mega-corporations exploiting her resources and leaving shit behind.

4. Sure cut the grass,
just cut out the chemicals to keep out bugs. She likes bugs. Her bumblebees are having a hard time these days, and many experts are pointing at insecticides as the cause of the dying hives.

We NEED bees. You don't NEED a perfect lawn.

We're not even giving our babies rights to the world. The future of each precious lil' treasure being born now is a disastrous shame because we did not respect our only world.
We need to give each species we drive to extinction the right to exist and prosecute the people who's decisions wiped them out.

6. Is this good news?
From what I can see, humans, (in very large numbers) are not getting much in the way of rights and any they had are under fire from the wealthy/corporate interests with increasing intensity each and every day.

I agree with the idea to establish rights for the biosphere because we are it ... we come into it and live. Yet, I shudder to think of how the vested interests would co-opt this treaty to somehow conflate their rights with the Earth's and continue to crowd the rest of us out of the picture.

Here is hoping that the treaty, if agreed on, will not be a yet another doorway to a Utopia for the rich and a means to cull the rest of us as "hazardous" to the well-being of the planet, just as the Fourteenth Amendment has become a means to give person-hood to corporations so that they can exert more power and control over our lives and our government, (as well as influence and exploit the rest of the people of the world).

7. The world is in need and we waste time with this?
Syria is denying wounded protesters medical care.
Japan's nuke problems just went Chernobyl.
The Mideast is exploding.
missiles are being shot into Israel.
China is imprisoning dissidents who have committed no crimes

Everywhere you look PEOPLE are in need.

and we waste out time with "pretend entities."

FACT: the earth is NOT a living being. Its a rock. We sentients are anthropomorphizing it into a deity when its not.

Is it too much to ask for the UN to grow up and do something USEFUL for once?

9. This is already the case in nearby Ecuador
where Pachamama (basically, "Mother Earth") has legal standing (through a human advocate) to bring suit against polluters, plunderers and the like.

12. but, but, what would George Carlin say?
"And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these fucking people kidding me? Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven’t learned how to care for one another, we’re gonna save the fucking planet?

I’m getting tired of that shit. Tired of that shit. I’m tired of fucking Earth Day, I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists............"
