As usual, any analysis of the composition of courts based on political party can only tell you so much. That being said, Republican judges are dwindling as judges retire and take senior status Obama is slowly filling them up with younger and we hope less conservative appointees.

4. Currently there are 36 district nominees that have not yet been confirmed.

That leaves 40 district level vacancies that still need nominations.

I'm not sure if you mean 'open slots' = vacancies
or
'open slots' = a vacancies without nominee
