17. Describing someone who has contributed so much as a talker is pretty pathetic.
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 12:41 AM by EFerrari
It's just that kind of anti-intellectualism that is allowing our schools to be picked off by privateers and the hell with our kids.

But theories at the end of the day doesn't simply trump practical application.....period.

22. Teaching young people is not a theory.
Those are trenches, too.

Speaking to groups of people all over the country, writing books for mass audiences, not theories either.

There are all kinds of trenches in this world. Period.

can only be done in theory.

6. This is one of the greatest things I have ever seen on TV
Al Sharpton obviously does not react well to criticism and turned a simple statement of truth by West into this big personal argument. Sharpton could not even formulate any sort of response to what West said and he just started ranting. Either way, I like seeing some real emotion on TV, everything nowadays is so PG and milquetoast, its not often you see two people get serious all of a sudden.

Cornel West is my fucking hero. The guy has done more to promote liberalism and respect for poor and working families than most could even dream of. Would love to see more of this stuff on cable news.

13. Princeton pays him over half a million a year. He's in the top 0.5% of
Americans as far as wealth goes. And that doesn't even include his book income and speaking fees.

Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 12:30 AM by Ramulux
Why dont you figure out who he is, what he has done with his life, what his actual beliefs are, what groups and organizations he donates to and volunteers for and then try to formulate an opinion on the guy rather than just lashing out at him illogically.

Check out this video and try to tell me he isn't an amazing human being

14. I don't have a problem with him, I just think he's a hypocrite
whose lavish lifestyle (ironically) depends on promoting a certain point of view. I'd be interested in seeing which charities he donates his millions to.

23. Again
Some evidence of this please. He is extremely involved in any number of liberal and progressive activist organizations, groups dedicated to fighting homelessness and poverty, he has dedicated his life to spreading the message of progressivism and getting people to acknowledge the huge amount of suffering going on in this country amongst the poor.

that led to being a mascot. He did not say Sharpton was one.

29. West called Al Sharpton the White House Mascot......
West got personal...

West said...."I worry about you brother, because you can be easily manipulated by those in the White House who do have the interest of the Wall Street oligarchs and corporate Plutocrats, in you being the public face, you could be another Black mascot...."

Sharpton responded...."As you saw in that film, I'm the one at the labor rallies, and doing the marching...you just saw that....while a lot of people are sitting around inside of their ivory tower, talking....."

that conversation starts at 2:11 in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HEqEQl4-Hs

32. I just gave it to you word by word......
As I transcribed it from the link I gave you along with the time when
the argument starts....West said to Al, "I worry about YOU.......YOU ending up being ANOTHER Black mascot.....(since West called Barack Obama a Black mascot as well).

That's West calling people names....and getting personal.
Very undignified and childish.

27. Excellent, thanks!
I notice when West was asked about the leadership in the black caucus, he says it has been awol for the most part.

He also points out that talking about cuts and not about spending is right wing terrain.

24. My good brother West was trying to say
that any critique of Obama is called out as forwarding the right wing agenda.

Sharpton came back with, don't blame this president for the behavior of people who have always been afraid to stand up for the people. And he included Congress in that.

They didn't get very far, which is too bad.
