Not an April Fool's joke. Friday, you see, is a holiday (Emancipation Day) in D.C. While Federal workers don't actually get the day off, the rules say that the deadline can't fall on a holiday, just like it can't on a weekend. (Northeasterners who file in Andover, MA run across this frequently with respect to Patriots' Day.)
http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20110413/BIZ/704139769/1014/BIZ06This Friday is April 15, the date synonymous with taxes, nervous twitches, occasional protests, sporadic cursing and late-night trips to the post office...
Thanks to a little-known Washington, D.C., holiday and some odd Internal Revenue Service rules, taxpayers have until Monday, April 18, to file their federal returns....
April 16 is Emancipation Day in Washington, commemorating President Abraham Lincoln's signing of an 1862 law freeing slaves in the District of Columbia. They were the first slaves freed by the federal government during the Civil War, and in 2005 the city government made the day an official local holiday.
Because April 16 falls on Saturday this year, the D.C. holiday will be celebrated on Friday, April 15.The beauty part of it is, teabaggers from sea to shining sea will be holding their anti-tax rallies on Friday, blissfully unaware that it is not actually tax day!!!
edit: check with your state about state taxes. CA will be honoring the extension.
