Words, words and more words
I'll wait and see what he actually DOES in the course of budget negotiations. After all, if the health care debates are any indicator, he may have already conceded some of the things he claims to be committed to. I'm sorry, his speeches are meaningless at this point. Only his actions matter.

3. He always says great thing, and betrays us
So many act like battered wives - thinking "this time it'll be different"

He needs to be pressured before we lose it all. He does what Repukes want and then some every time all the marbles are out there.

18. Thanks...
...And I'm sorry if I'm coming off sounding so terribly jaded. I would love nothing more than for President Obama so stand firm -- and actually fight, for once in his Presidency -- for the priorities he outlined in the speech.

10. I'm not condemning him --
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 01:57 PM by markpkessinger
I'm just refusing to jump on the "Praise" bandwagon until I see what he actually does. And I am not a President purporting to represent the stands he is committed to (whether he actually is or not).

12. I'll remember that next time ...
anyone mentions: Dennis Kucinich, Russ Feingold, Anthony Weiner ... or anyone else who has ONLY words to their credit. Not that I don't like those people. I do. I am merely trying to point out the laughable double-standard people hold here.

24. They don't have to: they're not executives.
They don't have to accomplish anything. They only have to vote. I know that sounds like I'm minimizing what they do. I'm not. I'm saying it's a different responsibility.

19. They were the correct words, and that does count for something
In order to beat back the Republicans over the debt ceiling and next year's budget, President Obama will need to repeat and amplify on these words across this nationa continualy. To destroy the Republican messaging, Obama has to have a more powerful and true message than theirs. He delivered that today.

So I won't call this speech meaningless, but we are in the early stages of this battle. In that sense I fully agree with you. This battle has a long way to go and Obama will be tested by his foes as he tries to hold the line.

21. Fair enough....
...I'll go along with that. But I don't think I'm being unreasonable in taking a "wait and see" approach when it comes to evaluating whether his actions ultimately comport with his rhetoric.

27. You might want to take a civics class and find out what drives ...
(or inhibits) COLA increases ... and its not a "cut", and Obama doesn't control it.

Learn all about it here.
http://www.ssa.gov/oact/cola/latestCOLA.html

Apparently Obama should go back to 1973 and change the law passed by congress.

... but thanks for playing the outrage game.

29. The President didn't commit to no cuts; he committed to opposing privatization and medicare voucher
And in case you didn't hear it, he said this, which is a classic tactic of Obama's to afford himself "wiggle room":

Finally, there are those who believe we shouldn’t make any reforms to Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security out of a fear that any talk of change to these programs will usher in the sort of radical steps that House Republicans have proposed. I understand these fears. But I guarantee that if we don’t make any changes at all, we won’t be able to keep our commitments to a retiring generation that will live longer and face higher health care costs than those who came before.

The benefit cuts will come. Mark my words.
