Taking Back The Discussion - Everywhere
With this speech, President Obama has given us the tools we need to take back the discussion. He said what he said. We can support what he said. So, let's do that, here on DU and everywhere. Take back the discussion. Support President Obama's goals, as expressed in this speech. Don't allow those who do not support the President in any way to control the discussion. Speak your mind. Speak your support of the goals. Speak plainly and loudly and often. Speak it to Congress. Speak it to your state legislators.

In the workplace, at home, wherever you are, including DU, express your support for those goals. Don't allow those who can say nothing positive to own the discussion. If we do this wherever we are, we can make it happen. If we do not, the loud voices of opposition will carry the day. For too long, many have kept their silence. Let's not do that any longer.

3. Sorry you missed the speech. You can find the transcript at
www.whitehouse.gov. It's good reading. It was even better listening.

8. You don't know the goals?
I'd bet you do. You just don't want to display that knowledge?

If one can't plainly, here on DU, give a rundown, or even a summary of the goals, they must not be to easy to grok, is what I am thinking.

11. Of course I do. If you don't, you can find them out.
That's not what this thread is about. It's about something else.

12. Here's what you wrote
""We can support what he said. So, let's do that, here on DU and everywhere. Take back the discussion. ""

So, I asked you what he said and you told me to go look somewhere else.
That's not a discussion. That's just a dis.
How can I support what he said if you can't tell me what the goals are?

I spent several minutes hunting and didn't find it.

16. I'm sorry. It's not up there yet, apparently. There are several
threads pointing to other sources. It will be on whitehouse.gov, but I guess it's not there yet.

In fact, I believe they should. What is the alternative? Thanks!

6. That's the only legitimate position from which to abandon anything, once you have fulfilled

ALL of your own responsibilities in regard to whatever it is that you SAY you value in any proposition. Anything else is looking for ponies in horseshit.

You cannot expect others to live up to their responsibilities if you aren't living up to yours.

14. I was prepared for the worst, but I loved it. Haven't felt this moved by Obama since 2008.
When he said he wouldn't let all that sh*t happen while he's President (I'm paraphrasing) and got a round of ovation, I just about cried.

19. I think I am going to believe one more time and have Hope he really means it this time.
I want nothing more than for him to succeed. For the Democratic Party and especially for America but as long as he/they believe "Everything is Negotiable" it makes it hard. Either he is going to take a stand against tax cuts for the wealthy as he says or it is Negotiable as he says.

21. Agreed
We have to take the offence on this. Republicans and especially the Tea party must be made to understand how immature, childish, irresponsible, and unfair the Ryan budget is. It should be easy to win this one!

Talk it up!

22. It's a good speech - I like the emphasis on WHY we have social programs
Because the US is rich enough that all should prosper, not just the fortunate few. I like the way he makes the point that the Republican agenda will change the future and heart of this country into something different and something most Americans do not want.

There are only two parts I really don't like - he ignored that in the early 80s Social Security rates for working Americans went up to prepare for the Baby Boomer retirement bubble. He ignored how that money SHOULD be there for the current wave of retirees and ignored why is is not.

I also don't like that he lumped Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid with "national security" as the largest part of our national budget. They are different programs with entirely different aims and at least in the case of Social Security and Medicare are funded completely differently than "national security." The reasons for those two distinctly different groups of programs to have increased so much in costs are completely different also - though they both have in common that profit taking by corporations is a large part of the increases.

Overall, I like the focus of this speech. I hope he sticks to his guns on the major points he has made. I will contact my Congress critters tomorrow and ask them to support our President for a better future for our country and ask them to stop supporting partisan causes.
