Barry Bonds found guilty of obstruction of justice
Bonds Found Guilty Of Obstruction Of Justice

Updated: 2:37 pm PDT April 13, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal court jury Wednesday found home-run king Barry Bonds guilty of obstructing justice, but deadlocked on the three other counts of lying to a grand jury in a case that stretched over several years and cost millions to prepare.

Federal Judge Susan Illston accepted the single verdict and declared a mistrial on the other three.

Bonds, Major League Baseball’s all-time home run king, had been charged with three counts of lying during his 2003 testimony before a grand jury investigating the BALCO lab scandal. A catchall charge of obstructing justice was also added by federal prosecutors.

During the trial Bonds defense team never denied the retired slugger had used performance enhancing drugs during his playing career. Instead they maintained, as did Bonds throughout his grand jury testimony, that he did not knowingly take them...

1. with every thing else going on in this country, with people
losing their jobs, their homes, and being hungry...................we're supposed to be worried about an overpaid fat baseball player that cheated and harmed his body with steroids then lied to congress about it.

ME THINKS

We should press some real charges against the previous maladministration for lying to Congress and the American citizenry about Iraq and the threat it posed to the country.

5. He actually didn't testify in Congress
It was at a Grand Jury in a BALCO case. You may be thinking of Roger Clemons and I agree--with Clemons it is a waste a of time. As far as Bonds, there isn't anything there that I wouldn't expect in charging someone who may of lied during a criminal investigation or prosecution.

4. Unbelievable
Obama/Holder should hold the BFEE to these criteria. Here's what they decided was obstruction of justice in Bonds' case:

Q: Did Greg ever give you anything that required a syringe to inject yourself with?

A: I’ve only had one doctor touch me. And that’s my only personal doctor. Greg, like I said, we don’t get into each others’ personal lives. We’re friends, but I don’t – we don’t sit around and talk baseball, because he knows I don’t want – don’t come to my house talking baseball. If you want to come to my house and talk about fishing, some other stuff, we’ll be good friends, you come around talking about baseball, you go on. I don’t talk about his business. You know what I mean? …

Q: Right.

A: That’s what keeps our friendship. You know, I am sorry, but that – you know, that – I was a celebrity child, not just in baseball by my own instincts. I became a celebrity child with a famous father. I just don’t get into other people’s business because of my father’s situation, you see…

That is the answer that, according to the jury, obstructed justice. This despite the fact that the government lawyers questioning him had every opportunity to follow up, to clarify and to tell Barry Bonds that he wasn’t answering their question. An opportunity that they didn’t take, presumably because at the time they didn’t think that the answer Bonds gave was particularly problematic.

------------

I copied/pasted the above from another board, none of it is my words. I agree with the poster, though, unbelievable that they would go to all this trouble for years to prosecute him and the jury would convict based on this answer. With those standards, all we have to do is drag W/Cheney/Rummie/anyrandombushie in front of a grand jury, and they'll spend the rest of their lives in the slammer.
