US lawmakers seek to ban chimp experiments
US lawmakers seek to ban chimp experiments

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US lawmakers proposed bills Wednesday banning medical research on chimpanzees in the United States, the last major industrialized country to still use to the apes for experiments.

"Scientists worldwide have halted chimpanzee experiments, because these intelligent creatures suffer immensely and are poor models for researching human diseases," said Elizabeth Kucinich, director of government affairs for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medecine.

Her research ethics group has campaigned for the bills now being sponsored in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Susan Collins, a Republican senator, are sponsoring the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act, which would put an end to experiments on chimpanzees.

7. I disagree vociferously
there is no need for a new Planet of the Apes movie.

4. I agree! I sleep better knowing we experiment on cute bunnies and kittens instead.
Or better yet, how about we experiment on Teabaggers to find out where they store their brains?

10. I second that and offer up GWB as the very first test subject
I really don't care what the experiment is, he said 'bring it on' to medical experiments and I heard Neil is onboard too!

Free medical experiments for all!

13. Yeah, But the Chimp Got to Experiment on Us!
We had to endure 8 years of his idiotic economic policies and a foreign policy that could have been devised by Satan. I swear he just made half the stuff up as he went along. Actually, a real chimp wouldn't have screwed things up nearly as much.

11. I happened to catch a segment on "Nightline" last evening, and
they were covering some study on over eating. They fed a group of caged chimps 'junk food'- which caused them to suffer many of the same health issues humans develop. It was pretty sad. A woman who'd done quite abit of work in the past with the same species spoke about closing down the program- she made some really good points.

Wish I had a link to it.

14. An excellent start.
Sadly these aren't the ONLY intelligent creatures that suffer immensely in our labs.
