Have you heard about the J. Crew controversy? Jon Stewert talking about it now
Edited on Wed Apr-13-11 10:12 PM by CatWoman
I think it's really, really STUPID!!! (the controversy, that is)

J. Crew ad sparks outrage on Web

and of course, Fox News views this as "an attack on masculinity" :eyes:

A J. Crew ad that shows a mother painting her little boy's toenails pink has sparked a storm of Internet outrage, with much of the vitriol directed at right-wing pundits who swiftly criticized the online ad and asserted such behavior might make a boy question his sexuality.

Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and Fox News contributor, wrote a column on the Fox News Web site discussing the clothing company's ad, which featured president and creative director Jenna Lyons painting her 5-year-old son Beckett's toenails. Ablow suggested that Lyons "put some money aside for psychotherapy for the kid" and wrote: "This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity."

The conservative Media Research Center called the ad "blatant propaganda celebrating transgendered children" and saying that Lyons was "exploiting Beckett behind the façade of liberal, transgendered identity politics."

Many bloggers condemned such reactions by social conservatives, and on Twitter people used everything from snark -- "Boy with pink toenails=BAD! Could be homofied!" -- to an online petition supporting J. Crew to voice their opinions.

Well, forget about DADT. Revlon should be forced to print warning labels on all their nail polish bottles.

34. Yes, didn't you know?
nature is amazing and so is the tech involved in manufacturing of said nail polish!

first it starts at the toes then spreads like a virus up the body and before you know it, BOOM, your child is gay.

Frankly, I think they should contact the CDC more than anything!

Do I really need to add the sarcasm thingy?

The wingers would probably freak out over the soundtrack/book nowadays. I wonder if anyone here remembers what the reaction was back in the 70's.

14. One of my friend's sons ran around with a cabbage patch kid
for a couple years when he was little, playing with it and looking after it. One of his aunties watching him play said to him, "you're going to be a real lady killer when you grow up Timmy", to which he replied in his little lisp, "Yeah, I'll whip their hearths out!"

Btw, he never turned out gay either, he is long married and has a family of his own.

The part where Nixon and his aide are talking about David Frost's shoes

"I like laces, sir. Manly laces"

This whole "a man must be x." bs

23. I'm outraged by this ad.
That shade of pink is entirely wrong for his skin tone and the clothes he's wearing. It could just be how bright the image is on my monitor, though.

Other than that? Meh. My mother taught me how to apply makeup in case I had kids that wanted to wear makeup one day. At least you can't almost poke your eye out with toenail polish.

24. Shoot, no. My little grandsons have had their
toenails painted at their request and play in costumes all the time, including tiaras, plastic high heels, tutus, and boas. My favorite picture of my now 10 yr old laddie is one of him at about age 3 all duded up in a pink tutu with matching boa, a pair of fairy wings, and a tiara over his musclebound Batman costume with a magic wand in one hand and a pirate sword in the other. He's doing fine for whatever fine is for him and we love him because he is who he is--a bright 10 yr old kid exploring the world around him and learning.

28. My son played with 'pink' colored toys and had an assortment of dolls
growing up... he appears to be quite hetero in his early 20s. My inlaws were stunned that I would buy him Polly Pockets and other 'girl' toys along with anything else he expressed interest in... to a point that is. Didin't buy him a Barbie as he requested as I wouldn't have bought a daughter one either.
