I admit I didn't help the discussion any when I said...
that creationism is a myth and that children should not have religion inflicted on them in a place that was supposed to be free of religion.

This was in class tonight where I offended 90% of the class. The topic was creationism, intelligent design, and evolution in education. One lady was outright pissed that her children aren't being taught creationism in science class. I probably should have said that's what churches and private schools are for. She kept insisting that it was so that all "theories" could be taught. I know better because it's an old and failed argument.

I even suggested that a world religion in class would assure that all creation myths would be taught, but seemed to have pissed her off even more. She wants it in science. :eyes:

1. Creationism is not a science. It's a cultural notion.
If the parent wants her child to "study" creationism, then she, the parent, should just tell her what it is. That's all there is to it. The idea could be explained in about three sentences.

5. Study it, show the PBS Documentary re:" Kansas and Intelligent Design."
Show this documentary, invite everyone.

My favorite part is at the end when the (Republican appointed) State Court Judge says, "We've got cancer to cure here."

The law of the land right now is that it is illegal to teach "creationism" in American public schools. This has been true since the late 90's.
Because of this October 20th, 2005 trial, it is also illegal to teach so called, "intelligent design."

2. This is just an extension of parents not wanting anything to do with their children
make the schools teach them everything, including religion apparently now.

8. It's a bit of that.
Mostly what they want are the schools to teach religion to other people's children.

Only the correct religion, of course. None of those weird heathen ones.

3. Ugh. It shouldn't be a 'topic' in school
Unless it's an ethics class or something.
It's bullshit. I would have been in even more trouble
