9. WTF should we do, ride horses?
Get a clue. Some of you bitch about Hummers, and then when a cleaner alternative comes along, you bitch about where the power comes from.

Goodbye, go dig peat in a bog and burn that for energy. Small steps are better than tripping and falling.

Or maybe I should hike the 15 miles to work each day.

Merry Christmas.

24. An electric plant doesn't necessarily need oil, as solar plants and wind farms expand.
This will especially take off when a smart grid is developed.

36. Solar and wind will never come close to meeting our current demand.
So, yes, the electric plant necessarily needs oil, coal or nuclear fuel.

Our only hope is for people to reduce the amount of electricity we use.

41. Never is a long time and current upward % increases of renewable energy usage world wide
suggest otherwise.

Reducing the amount of energy used should also come in to play but there must a be an aggressive conversion to more environmentally friendly sources as well, this is especially true as the Earth's human population now cracking 7 billion increases.

Just as the first automobiles were inefficient by today's standards, they nonetheless replaced he horse, so it will be with renewable energy, if humanity is to survive over the long term, we don't really have any choice.

22. Walk
What should we do"?

In a word: Walk.

If more people walked instead of getting in or on vehicles that consume fossil fuels, we'd have a much better planet.

That would mean, of course, that people would actually have to be committed to living near to their places of employment (assuming they are lucky enough to have a job!).

Riding a bicycle would also be OK.

10. I have a kid occasionally harass me about our blood center bus
in Moscow, Idaho. Moscow is where the U of I is and there are a lot of environmentalists there. I'm usually on their side. One time he was right that we could have been parked in a better place and I moved the bus.
We have to run a diesel generator for blood drives. It's runs pretty clean but the exhaust is an issue. He's complained and tried to force us to run on electric power. We can but it requires being able to plug in and the cord also becomes an issue. We never do it.
I told him that even using electricity we are impacting the environment somewhere. I have to resist using my W.C. Fields impression on him, "get outta here kid, ya bother me."

I used that argument on another thread a few weeks back, and someone accused me of sounding like a Republican. For referencing evolution.

I still stand by that. Birds have been flying for millions of years. You think they would have evolved to not fly into shit by now. The ones that do probably shouldn't be passing on their genetics anyway...

8. Many State require ANYTHING with an engine to be licensed if it is used on a public road.
Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 08:35 AM by happyslug
California and Texas (Among other states) permit 50cc or smaller engine mopeds (And electric engines of the same amount of power) to operate on the public road WITHOUT a license, but my home state of Pennsylvania requires ANYTHING with an engine to be registered with the state and HAVE a License. Sounds like Best Buy does NOT want to get into registration of Motor Vehicles in those states that REQUIRE such registration IF the bike is intended to be used on public roads (Pennsylvania even requires licenses on vehicles that operate only off road UNLESS it is used on property owned by the owner of the vehicle OR the owner of the Vehicle has the express written permission of the owner of the property).

Penndot's "Fact Sheet" on "MOPEDS, MOTOR-DRIVEN CYCLES AND MOTORCYCLES"
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/fact_sheets/fs-momo.pdf

It even mention motorized scooters, and clearly state they are illegal in Pennsylvania to be operated on public roads or sidewalks (you can use them on your own property, but NOT any sidewalk opened to the public).

http://www.pamsp.com/MotorcycleLaws.aspx

More details on Required on a Motorized Cycle or a Motorized pedacycles (Two different items under Pa Law, the above is a Motorized Cycle not a Motorized Pedacycle, thus MUST also pass state inspection):

15. I am just pointing out the LEGAL requirements to operate such a Vehicle
NOT that is can NOT be used to commute. Many states, Pennsylvania is among those states, REQUIRE anything on the road that has a motor or engine to be licensed AND the person operating said vehicle also have a license. If the Vehicle has a motor, and it is NOT licensed and you are not licensed it is illegal to use such a vehicle on the public roads of Pennsylvania.

19. My point was to answer the question of why this was only on the West Coast
Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 09:44 AM by happyslug
And why it may NOT extend to the rest of the nation. The seller does NOT want to get into registration of these electric cycles (which include annual inspections) and thus why this is only a West Coast item as opposed to the rest of the nation.

Something like this comes up every so many years on DU and people need to know what is legal is some states are NOT legal in others. Electric Mopeds is an example of that, in some states it is NOT a motor vehicle in others it is a motor vehicle.

Motorized cycles came up in the following DU threads:

in 2008:

In 2009:
