Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Rise; Inflation Pressure Grows

New claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, bouncing back above the key 400,000 level, while core producer prices clumbed faster than expected in March, government reports showed on Thursday.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000, the Labor Department said.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims slipping to 380,000.

The prior weeks figure was revised up to 385,000 from the previously reported 382,000.

The four-week moving average of unemployment claims—a better measure of underlying trends—climbed 5,500 to 395,750.

No one could have possibly seen this coming. Inflation hasn't been too bad (for a while now)...on everything except food, gas prices, insurance premiums, everything at the grocery store, and electricity bills. You know, the things you can't live without.

The fact that the CPI can claim that inflation hasn't risen sharply in the last few years completely discredits them. Anyone that has been in a grocery store and pays bills knows prices have gone up.

wants to kick in, it wouldn't be too soon. I mean, it is why Obama extended the wealthy that huge tax break that seniors are now going to have to pay for, right? To create jobs?

5. State and local budgets are going to drive some of this

There are government layoffs occurring and they will continue to occur for the next year or two. Unless private sector hiring can make up for the decreased public sector jobs, I don't see how the UE rate can be brought down below the magic 8 number.

The state rate was 9.6 percent, up from January's 9.4 percent. Tennessee was also behind the national unemployment rate of 8.9 percent.

But Labor Commissioner Karla Davis said there are positive signs for Tennessee's economy. She pointed out that since February 2010, Tennessee has added 35,000 jobs across a range of industries.

Instead of gaining jobs we are going backward...Excep...Haslem believes in giving his cronies pay raises...God help us...I wish Gov Bredesen had been able to run for a third term....
