Boy Cuts Throat At School; Officials Don’t Call 911

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The parents of a Natomas school district student were furious after learning school officials didn’t call 911 after their son cut his throat at school.

Todd and Sonya Gomez said their 7-year-old son tripped and fell into a fire hydrant while running at Witter Ranch Elementary School, opening up a deep gash underneath his chin.

“When I got there, he was drenched in blood from his neck down to his waist,” Sonya said. “He weighs 54 pounds.”

The parents said the school principal never called paramedics, but instead called the boy’s parents while the student sat by himself in the nurse’s office. Todd Gomez said there was “absolutely no nurse” on duty at the school.

been as rare as hen's teeth for a long time.

My son is 31 - when he was in school I volunteered to help staff the nurses office during the week, because his district (not rich, not poor) had one nurse for over twenty schools. We (parent's) weren't trained professionals, of course, but at least we could handle most issues that came up.

How could any competent adult not call 911 for that kind of injury?

6. My nephew partially severed his finger at school.

They didn't call 911. Instead they took him on a BUS to a hospital 40 minutes away. This is an expensive private school. And his father, a lawyer, didn't sue. Which I certainly would have.

I think they were trying to avoid an investigation into the school.

8. My son's school was the opposite, he fell off a swing set, they wouldn't let him get up.

They called 911 and the paramedics strapped him down. The ambulance took him to the emergency room and xrayed his neck all while he was claiming he was fine.

How could anyone decide not to call emergency services with an injury like that? And no one stayed with him to comfort and console him. The whole thing's just wrong on so many levels!

loss of blood. I would be livid if that were my kid. i smell lawsuit. and frankly i wouldn't blame them. this kid could have died from blood loss alone.

14. The fact that they left him in a room alone

really sticks with me. Not calling for help when there is no nurse on staff is bad enough, but to put him in the nurses office by himself! The poor little guy was probably terrified.

16. You are assuming there was an "extra" adult around to stay with him.

I do agree that the principal should have been the one to stay with him.

In our buildings, if there is no nurse on duty, the over-worked secretary gets the double duty of caring for sick children. We don't have a principal in the building at all times and the classroom teachers are supervising up to 30 students in their classrooms.

"Too worried about thier money. Teacher’s are all about the money and not the kids. They call in sick to protest for money. They take money away from oour kids with their over paid retirement scams. They can’t argue this fact, just look at the tests scores of our children. Down, Down and Down. Either they don’t care or can not teach. Either way they deserve less money. They work part time. Summer’s off and leave the campus by 3:00pm. Give me a break. Vouchers will get rid of these money greedy pigs."

Yes, that's why teachers go into teaching, for the money and that cushy job dealing with 20-40 seven year olds at a time.

I once wanted to be a teacher (and still do in a way) but they do not pay enough to make me want to switch careers...

13. When I was in Kindergarten, I got hit in the head with a small sharp rock.

It opened a huge gash on my forehead (13 stitches required) and all I can remember was not being able to see as blood poured into my eyes. I also remember the Principal of the school rushing me in his personal car to the hospital.

15. There's nothing scarier than trying to pull out from your neighborhood,

watching an ambulance zip by and realizing it's for your kid. I pulled in right behind them. Ds' teacher was an army medic and had the situation well in hand when we arrived (sizable gash to the leg from running into a bench while playing football). The paramedics wrapped the leg up well enough to slow the bleeding, and I took him to the ER as the ambulance was freaking him out.

BTW, chin gashes are *always* very bloody--BTDT multiple times. Can't imagine a school not having a nurse or medic around.

at school because of their behavior.

I can't believe they could not find one single adult to sit with the kid while they waited for the parent.

20. When I was a kid far too many years ago, there was no school nurse

It was weeks after I had a third degree burn to my foot, when an incident at school caused the healing scar tissue over the burned area on my foot to be pulled off. Then entire top surface of my foot began bleeding. They sat me in the school office next to a secretary and I sat there while she located my mother on the phone and told her to come get me. I remember watching my shoe fill with blood and a pool of blood collect around my feet. Oddly enough I never felt light headed or queasy.

I know there was no serious danger of me bleeding to death - there was much less danger for me than there was for the school officials that could not even be bothered to wrap a towel around the foot or to prop the foot higher than my heart. My mother was that angry I heard her lay into the people in the office as she took me out. After she took me to the doctor to get a proper bandage and antibiotics, she took me home and called the principal, a school board member and a county commissioner and laid into them.

I always felt sorry for the janitor who had to clean up the mess.
