How many people here actually know anything about cars?
American Made!
Foreign Quality!

Reminds me of those stupid debates we would have in high school, (Ford vs. Chevey vs. Dodge)
Of course the Dodge boys always got blasted :)

When I say the 22R & 22RE was/is one of the greatest four bangers of all time do you know what I'm talking about?

When I say the slant six was a underpowered oil eating POS that would last 200K do you have a clue?

Do know the Mazda Tribute and the Ford Escape are the same car?

Did you know that the 307 is a fucking joke and gets laughed at by anybody who knows anything about anything?

Did you know that Chrysler fucked up with the first couple years of the new 4.7L V8 and the oil guides were not large enough? (and they never did a recall causing a lot of pissed off people with blown engines)

Did you know all Grand Prix in the mid 2000s (W platform) have an issue where the intermediate steering shaft start clicking and clanking when turning at low speeds?

Did you know that all those zippy 2.2L that Chrysler was putting out in the late 80's, early 90's ate timing belts for lunch, but had great power and fuel economy?

Do you know what a unibody is and what SUV do and don't have one?

I propose if you are going to talk about cars try to be specific, as every brand and manufacturer foreign and domestic have their strong and weak points. Otherwise it's all just playground banter...

Wait...maybe DU is just playground banter...I'm on to something- Whatever, time for smoke break :)

1. Sound like you already had a "smoke break."
:hi:

BTW, I thought a four-banger had to do with porn. But I could be wrong.

Cause I've yet to find one :)

17. Define decent.
My first Chrysler had an M6. Sort of automatic, but not entirely. Worked fine.
Second was a 59 Plymouth Savoy, with a PowerFlite. Never gave any problems, even though acceleration was lousy, since it was just a two-speed.
All my other Chrysler products were manual transmission vehicles.

But, you still don't define decent. Do you mean decent reliability or decent performance?

20. My first Chrysler was a 1968, 300 with a 440 and dual exhaust. Awesome boat.
It had over 460,000 miles when the odometer broke. I wish I still had it.

23. I'm really old. The first car I ever owned was a 1953 Chrysler
New Yorker, complete with a hemi-engine. That was in 1964. I've been buying cars that were 10 years old or older ever since.

There's a complete list of my cars and other vehicles, with photos and a story about each at: http://www.osomin.com/mycars.htm

Many people get a kick out of that page. I get emails. Funny...

27. Wow, nice list. I especially like the 52 Dodge with the Flat Head 6.
In the 80s, I almost bought a 1936 Chrysler with a flat head six. It had never been rebuilt and ran well. It was missing brakes and the separate panel that made up the center of the roof. I didn't have a garage at the time so I passed.

30. Basically the same engine as the one in that 59 Plymouth.
Dead reliable engine. Deadly poor performance, though. Somewhere, I have the tools to do a valve job on one. I don't suppose I'll ever need them.

24. reliability...
or at least just not being wishy washy :)

I've got the 545RFE in my Dakota and it's been pretty good, but it's standard Chrysler. Always trying to upshift when it shouldn't, trying to downshift when it shouldn't...

Down my street it's 30mph and it just hates it (should I be in 3rd, or 4th, 3rd or 4th, with a little clunk each time it goes into 4th.)

They have always just had iffy transmissions in my mind. Buddy with a Durango and his acts the same way. He's got 160K and I'm at 107K so I guess it will be fine for some time.

9. I helped my Dad rebuild his '57 Chevy in the driveway when I was 10...
And I helped my Grandpa work on several pickup trucks... Dodge, Ford, and Chevy.

Pre 1970, I'm good! After that, in CA anyway, there was so much guldurned smog crap I didn't understand... and now all sorts of computer junk I don't want to understand! Still, when I go to the mechanic I've already diagnosed the problem 9 out of 10 times.

I am one with my vehicile... currently a 2002 Mazda Protege... not too sexy, but she does indeed ZOOM ZOOM! Sea-foam green with a seashell necklace hanging from the rear view mirror (because in my heart I'm still a beach bunny surfer chick and I try to spend as much time as possible at the beach)... and soon to be a Cosmic Peace sticker on the back window... like the one in my sigline.

Edited on Thu Apr-14-11 11:13 AM by OneTenthofOnePercent
I'm talking about the 6-bolt version. Its got less longevity between service/rebuilds... but you can get ALOT of power reliably (for a four cylinder) from a 4g63 with minor modification. If you kept the power output at reasonable levels, it was very reliable performance.

But for 4 cylinder indestructability? 22RE all the way.

I like 4 cylinders... they are easier to work on, IMO.

Can I play?

A modern Top Fuel Dragster can accelerate from a standing start to 100 MPH in 8/10th of a second. An estimated 7000 HP helps.

There was no 1983 model Corvette

Tuned Port Injection was on only the 1982 and 1984 Corvettes.

The first Corvette to roll off the factory floor for model year 1953 would not start, because they grounded the electrical to the fiberglass body, which doesn't conduct electricity.

The Chrysler slant 6 lasts forever.

Don't know much about modern cars or imports, though.

-90% Jimmy

90% is the maximum nitromethane percentage allowed in the Big Leagues. However, if you race under nostalgia nitro rules, you can go up to the maximum possible 98% nitro. The other 10% is methanol, which I think Indy cars use.

Modern cars don't even need a tune up until 100,000 miles. A car from the fifties would require the engine to be rebuilt twice in the same interval. Much better engineering and materials these days.

15. They got two more wheels than a bicycle
And they have to stop all the time so the driver can give money to some greasy-looking and -smelling guy at something called a "filling station" or they can't drive anymore.

Anything else you want to know? 'Cause that's about as much as I got.

transfer cases - cars, trucks and motorcycles.
I don't 'know it all', but I damn sure know more
than most.

22. No, it is a trick question
'Cause Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.

32. I know lots of things about cars
They have four wheels. They are powered by gasoline. They are made of metal, plastic and glass. They go very fast.

And I know a bunch of other things too, like where the brake pedal is and the accelerator pedal, and how to open the glove compartment and slide the seat back and how to open the gas tank and change oil and put air in the tires. I even rotated my tires once (bad idea because they ended up unbalanced) and put in a new alternator (after I suspect the dishonest mechanic had put a bad one in while changing my oil.)

So, it would not be accurate to say that I do NOT know ANYTHING about cars. Do I know enough to converse and debate the particulars with the average motorhead? Hell to the no. Nor do I care to.

33. I once replaced a head gasket in the parking lot of a K-mart.
I was too cheap or too broke (I don't remember which) to call a tow truck. And who cares what K-mart thinks? Maybe they didn't say anything because they thought I might get frustrated and abandon the POS car right there.

Our family truck has a 22R engine. My wife bought it new.

Strangers come to the door and ask if it's for sale. I should probably chain it to a tree. It's already been stolen once but the knuckleheads who stole it called attention to themselves by shooting at people before they could deliver it to the chop shop and the police recovered it.

I hate cars. I hate trucks. I hate driving. I resent everything I know about cars, every dollar I've ever spent on cars, and every second I've wasted driving them. If I never have to buy another *&^%$&^$&&^!!! car or truck again I'll be a happy man. If I was Emperor of the Earth I would outlaw them.
