Thousands may sue over police kettling at G20 protests

Thousands of people found by the high court to have been illegally detained for hours by police at a central London protest may sue Scotland Yard for false imprisonment.

The high court has ruled that the Metropolitan police had broken the law in the way it kettled up to 5,000 demonstrators at the G20 protests in April 2009.

The judges heard police used the tactic of mass detention against protesters that they accepted were peaceful, with officers meting out punches to the face, slaps and shield strikes as they tried to move a demonstration against climate change.

Judges found that the force used by police was "unjustified", criticised "imprecise" instructions given by senior officers about releasing innocent people, and said the mass detentions for five hours were an unlawful deprivation of liberty under article 5 of the European convention on human rights. ..............(more)

as well as other countries. They assume their readership is curious about everyone. Still don't see what that has to do with the monarchy.

2. Avaaz has a petition

To ask the government to release financial details around that fiasco, as well...the usual business of handing out money to cronies. It went up at 11:00, with a target of 30,000 petitions. When I signed at 12:00 or so, there were over 14,000 signatures. About 12:30, they upped the target to 75,000 signatures. The 30,000 target has been exceeded now; there are almost 32,000 signatures at the moment and it's still going strong.

I would like to see Harper lose his majority, but I don't think that's going to happen. There are too many people who have taken the message for the reality.
