Freepers/wingnuts doomed to high electric bills because of their ideology. |
|
Quite a number of the brain-dead extreme right refuse to use nanny-state CFLs, even though converting to CFLs can really take a nice chunk out of the electric bill. These dumb-asses really crack me up, since they are once again making decisions that are detrimental to themselves, yet they have no choice. They are slaves to their own rigid ideology, all the while raging about "freedom of choice".
They all seem to be kind of overly obsessed with the light bulb thing. I guess that's because it's something where they can actually affect change by doing their own personal (and very brave) sacrifice for the goal of taking back their country. I mean, they can't personally go and give all their money to billionaires. They need middlemen to achieve that. The incandescent bulb sets them free.....makes them soldiers...fighting for a cause. It's awesome.

2. In the town where I live the wingnuts hate "roundabouts" |
|
You know, the circular intersections that replace traffic lights, reduce congestion and are cheaper to maintain? For some reason the crackpots here really, really hate them. There isn't a single LTE in the local paper from a conservative that doesn't mention the scourge of the roundabout which has attacked our way of life.

6. There's nothing conservative or liberal about roundabouts. |
|
I can't stand them either. They're nonsensical insofar as that much interchanging and merging in that LITTLE of an area is fraught with more danger than a traffic light will ever be. The only time they're more efficient is when there is virtually no traffic.
Unless your roundabouts are ~substantially~ larger than ours, of course. Here, you have about one car length to immediately merge unless you're making a righthand turn. Seriously.

It's only the conservatives who rail against them here. They seem to work fine here, I don't know what to tell you. Do you also have problems merging into traffic on the interstate and do you come to a complete stop in the street to make a right turn? I think I've been behind you a couple of times. But even with your dislike of the process, I don't think you see them as an attack on America as the nuts here seem to.

14. The roundabouts are cheaper to maintain because people avoid them if they can. |
|
They take up too much room in most places. I am most acquainted with Weed Circle on Kamehameha Highway on North Shore, Oahu.
The city where I lived a few year ago, tried one in a residential district closed to where I lived. The idea was to 'calm' the traffic in and out a fairly large well-to-do housing development. Only 3 ways in and out and most people used this intersection as it was the most direct route to the main N/S street. Anyway, I wrote a LTTE listing some of the problems, including large fire trucks getting through. The Fire Chief sent one of his fire engines there to check it out. No matter how they did it, they had to drive on somebodies lawn and/or sidewalk to get around it. It got ripped out shortly there after.
The sidewalks were only on one side of the streets and next to the curb.

3. It will be a moot point soon |
|
We'll have cheap LED lighting commonly available before you know it, without the higher price and mercury risks of the CFLs, and without the energy use cost of incandescents.

LEDs are getting cheaper all the time. We're working on LED grow lights that can really get the job done. :hippie:

5. And continuing to buy huge gas guzzlers because they are in a 'free country' isn't helping them |
|
either. If you willingly purchase one of these vehicles and you live in a suburb and don't require it for some heavy work weekly, you don't have the right to complain about gas prices. imho

7. It's the concept of choice being taken... less freedom. |
|
Taking choices away never has a great reception because on a basic instincual level it is a loss of some freedom. We all have a right to freedom, but the question becomes, do we have a right to make choices of preference not in our best interest? And if not, where does that stop? To what limitation do other people have the right to make preferrential choices for us?
Seems kind of silly that I can't use a lightbulb that uses a few more watts... but I can choose to drive a car that gets 12mpg and crank my thermostat to 80 in the winter and 65 in the summer.
In about 75% of the other rooms I choose CFL because they're cheaper to power and rarely need replaced. In some rooms in my house I choose to incandescents. I like the warmth of the light. I like having that freedom choice... it has nothing to do with making political statements.

17. I mostly agree with that. |
|
I use some incandescents myself, and I don't think they should be outlawed, but I'm not trapped by any ideology when it comes to choosing light bulbs. The folks I'm referring to have no choice. Their world-view prevents them from using those fucking dirty hippie CFLs.
Incandescents use quite a few more watts than CFLs of comparable brightness.

Guess it's one of their favorite "big government bad" "free market good" examples. They're so funny - "No one can MAKE ME change my light bulbs!" They sound like 5 year old children...
