The Archdiocese of Milwaukee will challenge a request by its bankruptcy creditors for a court-appointed forensic accountant to analyze its finances, Archbishop Jerome Listecki said in his weekly pastoral message Wednesday, calling such a review an unnecessary and costly expense.


At issue, the motion said, is the Milwaukee Archdiocese's transfer of more than $125 million in the weeks and years leading up to the bankruptcy - some of it into newly created trusts - and whether that money should be allowed to be tapped to pay claims by sex abuse victims.

If they're so friggin sure their money manipulations were legit and not merely a means of stashing some dough out of the reach of plaintiffs, they should be more than willing to open their books to the courts.

The fact that they're being so secretive about it tells me all I need to know.

They know these people are serious, they have a good case and they stand a very good chance of winning in court and opening the archdiocese to a truckload of new claims.

and they don't want to open their financial records? What a bunch of arrogant pricks! I have been in bankrupcy court and if they ask for the records if you do not provide them you will be out the door. We'll see if they are treated the same way.
