Marijuana Not So Green - big carbon footprint?
Study Finds Growing Pot Indoors is Energy-Intensive

— "Cannabis production results in energy expenditures of $5 billion each year."

— The electricity use is equivalent to that of two million average U.S. homes.

— It accounts for one percent of national electricity consumption.

To put it in more real-life terms, Mills writes that one joint "represents two pounds of CO2 emissions, an amount equal to running a 100-watt light bulb for 17 hours with average U.S. electricity."

12. How many deaths from Marijuana externalities? 0.....that's ZERO!

How much energy does the production of tobacco, or alcohol, or even automobiles consume?

And for whatever massive amounts of energy are used to produce those items, we get (figures are averages from 1999-2007):

Tobacco annual deaths = 435,000

Alcohol annual deaths = 85,000

Automobile annual deaths = 26,347

Marijuana annual deaths = 0

16. And that's not the only good post on that thread, apparently Mr. Mills doesn't make a distinction
between the burning of contemporary carbon as in the smoking of cannabis and that of fossil fuels buried for millions of years.

9. When it's legal it can be grown outside... and use a free energy source!
This is another good reason to legalize!

10. They needed a study for that?
Who knew that running 1,000-watt lights 24 hours a day would use a lot of energy?

15. Wow, what a bunch of crap.
Cannabis is no different than any other crop in its demands on sun, soil and water. Sure if you grow it in garages, under lamps, it's going to use more energy. My neighbor grows his own medical marijuana legally alongside his other herbs, cabbages, and other kitchen crops. Same water and fertilizer is used for all.
