Poll question: On a scale of 1-5 rate your governor
I'm just excited to be in a state with a great governor (Delaware and Governor Jack Markell) and I know this country isn't overloaded with governors like Kasich, Walker, Scott and Brewer. Rate your governor and check in with who you have.

Anyhow, we need to know what states we have to focus on so more of you have great governors again!

Brown's fiscal conservatism is still likely to do more damage than good, especially to higher education and services for the poor, elderly, sick, etc. He has so far been unwilling to even discuss progressive taxes to fill the budget hole with revenue-- his proposals to extend existing taxes place most of the burden on the middle class and the poor.

California isn't broke. It STILL has the worlds 8th largest and most robust economy, putting us ahead of many COUNTRIES that care for their citizens far better than California does. Brown isn't providing leadership when he pledges not to do what's necessary to solve the state's budget problem without agreement by all stake-holders. Republicans are NOT going to get on board no matter what he proposes-- they benefit politically when Brown fails or even simply appears to flounder. Anyone with even the slightest conservative ideological leaning will vote to throw a monkey-wrench into Brown's plans if they ever get a chance-- remember, he's asking poor and middle class Californians to raise taxes on themselves while letting wealthy individuals and corporations utterly off the hook.

So my assessment SO FAR is that while Brown's social liberalism is a breath of fresh air in Sacramento, and I certainly applaud the increased access that I and my union have in the governor's office, I'm afraid his deep fiscal conservatism is ham-stringing his ability to LEAD California out of its doldrums.

On edit-- at the recent April 13 demonstrations on my campus, I spotted a sign that really says everything I want Jerry Brown to hear: "Tax the rich. Problem solved."

Thank you. He's not the savior so many make him out to be. Yes, anything's better than Ahnie but he came out against PROP. 19 (legalize marijuana) and he's too much of a Party Puppet. The draconian cuts he's making because he refuses to tax the rich are no better than what a Republican governor would have done.

I'm tracking SB676 (legalizing hemp) which just got through the Ag Committee and is now in Sec. Committee. It's passed the leg. twice already and both Wilson and Ahnie vetoed it. I'm going to be real interested as to how Brown handles this one.

Taxpayer Rip-Off of the Week Award: The Kasich Budget’s “Secret Six”
APRIL 12, 2011 BY EDITOR

For Immediate Release:
April 12, 2011
Contact: Dale Butland
614-783-5833
INNOVATION OHIO’S TAXPAYER RIP-OFF OF THE WEEK:
THE KASICH BUDGET’S “SECRET SIX”

LITTLE KNOWN BUDGET PROVISIONS MAKE OBM DIRECTOR A CZAR;
FAVORED CONTRACTORS WOULD PAY NO BUSINESS TAXES

Columbus—Innovation Ohio, a progressive think tank headquartered in Columbus, today presented its second “Taxpayer Rip-Off of the Week” Award to the “Secret Six” pages of the Kasich budget which would not only give the Administration unprecedented contracting authority, but also exempt winning contractors from paying any state or local business taxes, including the state “CAT” that all other businesses are required to pay.

Squirreled away between pages 261 and 266 of HB 153 (Kasich’s proposed two-year budget) are 200 seemingly innocuous lines that would make OBM Director Tim Keen the most powerful unelected person in Ohio. These passages authorize him to contract out—for up to 75 years—ANY state service to ANY applicant that he alone deems “qualified” to “more efficiently and effectively provide those services.” Best of all, contractors Keen picks as winners would pay no business tax on gross receipts or on any income “derived from providing public services.”

There is no requirement that the favored bidder be current on taxes, operate a safe workplace, pay a legal wage or even be an Ohio company that employs Ohioans. Nor is there any prohibition against awarding contracts to major Kasich campaign contributors. And awards would not be subject to review or approval by the state Controlling Board or anyone else.

Said Innovation Ohio’s Communications Director Dale Butland:
“With these “Secret Six” pages, the Governor’s proposed budget takes “taxpayer rip-off” to a whole new level. They transform the OBM Director into an unaccountable modern day Czar, vested with unchecked power to contract out any state service to any company he alone deems ‘qualified.’ The lucky companies get a contract for up to 75 years and—as an extra bonus—don’t have to pay taxes on the money they earn!

“So let’s review. A generous Kasich campaign donor behind on his taxes—who operates a call center in Bangladesh paying workers $4.00 per day—would pay no business taxes on income from a state contract providing job re-training advice to unemployed Ohioans over the phone.

“Of course, public scrutiny, legislative oversight, and tax fairness don’t mesh with privatizing state services ‘at the speed of business.’ It’s a ‘new day and a new way.’ And transparency and fairness are so yesterday.”

But hey, he's only been governor for a couple months and it looks like he's taking a pretty good shot at it. I'm encouraged that he doesn't hesitate to talk shit to the people who helped cause the mess.

There really was no category for "Too soon to tell".

Now the governor we had before this one, he was a worthless POS. Plus I think the governor of a state ought to be able to pronounce that state's name and he couldn't.

Mary Fallin
A woman who was caught with her panties down around her ankles giving a blow job to her highway patrol escort down by the lake. She and her hiway patrol escort both got a divorce because of it but yet the stupid here in our state elected her as our fucking governor.

Personally I think we here in Oklahoma are being screwed by our electronic vote counting machines. We used to elect good honest people in office then somehow they started using these black boxes to count our votes and things have gone to shit ever since. On a local level most times our elections will be decided at the Democratic primary as no :puke: will even try but on the national level we get the likes of Mary 'panties around her ankles' Fallin as governor, Dr No as senator number two and airplane pilot senator number one. Sen. Coburn and Inhofe is who I'm referring to here. :grr:

Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 05:50 PM by Wounded Bear
I don't really blame Christine. Of course, I have to admit that I was out of state until 2005, so I missed a lot of the early wrangling on it.

Personally, I want a new viaduct, as it is a Seattle icon to me. But I want to move on and just get something done. Now the mayor is asking for another vote? Really? We've had 3. The viaduct is going to fall down someday, and somebody will get killed when it does.

Late add: I can't vote her that low on any single issue.

54. Mitch Daniels gets a 3 from me, but the Indiana republicans get a 0.
Working within Indiana politics, I get to see more than the public sees. And I've realized that all the crappy stuff the republicans in Indiana are pushing are not really backed by Mitch (other than the education reform, but the parts Daniels supported aren't too bad). Maybe it's because Mitch is gearing up to run for President (which I think he would be the best option if a republican won), but he isn't doing too bad in my book. He avoids the social issues that the republicans are pushing (gay marriage bans, anti-abortion, etc), and really only focuses on economic issues.

Or maybe it's because I have the worst mayor in America (Greg Ballard), so Mitch just looks good in comparison.

And I'll admit, I was suckered by the Washington Post's almost maniacal "it's going to be really, really close" coverage of the election. So much so that I started telling anyone who would listen to go vote O'Malley.

And then he wins by 14 points.

168. While I regret your pain, governors like Walker, Kasich, Fallin
may be the straw that finally breaks the camel's back and bring about a permanent democatic and progressive lead government in states and on the national level. Voters were angry a democrats for not solving a completely fucked up situation fast enough. But now, many of those voters see how badly they can get damaged by republicans. That teabagger events aren't drawing the crowds that they once drew is no accident. Voters that once fell for the teabagger message now see them for what the baggers are, a reincarnation of the republican, religious right that was so soundly rejected in 2006 and 2008. If democrats don't f is up, 2012 could be a bumper year for democrats. I just got a mailer from a former democratic congresswoman in a neighboring state who was defeated by a republican. She sees that repub's votes and have laced on her gloves again and is ready to fight through 2012.

Those Republican doctors are vile enough but a GOP preacher/doctor is scary as zombie Reagan and a nuclear meltdown on the front porch.
Especially old Ernesto there since he had the intellect of bug splatter.

We might be crazy in the Commonwealth but we are wise enough to generally pass on Republican Governors. I hope that allowing consecutive terms hasn't screwed that up.
It kept us from getting caught in throw the bums out cycles by allowing our guys to run away from the last one, if need be.
Three terms of Republican governors since reconstruction is nothing to sneeze at in any state in the Union and I'd like to keep it that way.

89. Texas here. Our Governor has limited powers. A gift to us from the Reconstruction
Which makes him somewhat less dangerous than others are forced to deal with in the US. As such, I'd say his main priority is padding the pockets of his "good ol' boy" network at the expense of the lower income and working class people in the state. Well, that and prancing around like a bloated peacock (my apologies to bloated peacocks everywhere for the association.) He's pretty much a classic windbag Republican.

104. Correct on all counts.
Most southern state governors have limited power due to the Reconstruction. Which is one of the reasons I was surprised to see Bush actually get the nomination. I knew they were grooming him for the bid while he was Governor in Texas. Yet, I still managed to be surprised when Republicans gave him the nod. It goes to show how little most Americans really know about individual states political structures.

You're also correct about DeLay fucking up Texas beyond repair. We (Democrats) made huge gains in 2008 and for a brief moment we thought we may be able overwhelm the damage done in Texas by sheer force of will. Then 2010 came and we lost so much ground it's actually worse now than it was before. We still hold our urban areas, even if not as securely as before, but all of the rural areas are a total loss. I've had old-timers tell me they've never seen a political climate in Texas this bad. Now, with a band of the most excessive (read: batshitcrazy) Republicans in power, we're about to be redistricted again. The future does not look bright for Texas Dems, or Texas poor, elderly or our children for that matter. I doubt it will again in my lifetime.

107. There really needs to be a law about redistricting
I use to live in Pennsylvania and they did some seriously whack things with redistricting like splitting up Philadelphia so the districts would reach far out into the suburbs and rural parts of the surrounding counties. I remember one district in the Philly area with a 'lollipop' section that was used to lump a very dem/jewish neighborhood in with the bumpkins from Upper Bucks county.

Redistricting laws need to be set to certain areas. Districts should be created in a way that have defined borders and shapes. End of discussion. That's the only way we're going to save some of these states and get a fair representative for the people who live there.

109. Lollipop shaped districts are nothing. We have districts that resemble snakes.
I kid you not. Twisting and winding half way across the state.

The US Voting Rights Act protects against discriminatory redistricting, such as was found to have been done in one district in Texas. However, other than that it's impossible to get any US entity to touch a tool which has been used since the 1700's to gain, or hold, political leverage. They simply refuse to give up such a longstanding tradition of manipulative corruption.

174. The latest poll showed that if the election was run last week, Corbett would
have lost by 5 percentage points. Many voters in your state have buyer's remorse. If democrats play their game right, 2012 and 2013 are setting up as bumper election years. 2012 is obvious, but in 2013, the New Jersey fatso and the Virginia dumb-ass come up for reelection for governor. And the Virginia AG job is up for grabs in 2013.

And I would argue better than Holden, the Dem before Blunt as well. I'm generally happy with him. He has punted a couple times on more progressive issues, but now that I'm trying to remember the specifics on those, I'm drawing a blank. Will proudly support his re-election, though!

Also, there was an assassination attempt against him in 2010 that surprisingly got almost NO media coverage. I guess just because he was still at the airport at the time? He was scheduled to speak at a KC college, and a student stabbed a dean just outside of the room where Nixon was scheduled to speak, thinking incorrectly that the dean WAS Nixon.

We've had worse but the governor still sucks - I say this only because we had Jim Gibbons. In an sane world Brian Sandoval would make 'worst governor ever'.

Rick Perry is a -25 as a governor and his hair is probably a 2.

222. McConnell is a joke
The only "good" thing is that he rarely shows his face on tv here in Virginia. And the way things are going, I sometimes wonder if he even CARES about being our Governor...

226. Tom Corbett
He deserves a -100 but the best I can do on this poll is a 1. PA is stuck with the SOB for 3 1/2 more years.
