Obama caught on audio slamming GOP
Yesterday, President Obama delivered some of his harshest criticism yet of his recent battle with Republicans to fund the government.
However, Obama may not have intended for everybody to hear him.

While listening to an audio feed from a Chicago fundraiser Thursday night, CBS News reporter Mark Knoller heard Obama speaking with donors after other reporters had left the room. That's when the president really opened up about his disdain for the recent GOP pushback: "I said, 'You want to repeal health care? Go at it. We'll have that debate. You're not going to be able to do that by nickel-and-diming me in the budget. You think we're stupid?'" the president reportedly said.

Obama also complained about GOP attempts to attach a bill to the resolution to fund the government that would defund women's health services provider Planned Parenthood.
"Put it in a separate bill," the president said he told House Speaker John Boehner and his staff. "We'll call it up. And if you think you can overturn my veto, try it. But don't try to sneak this through."
The president also made clear he is no fan of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), the GOP's Budget Committee chairman.
"When Paul Ryan says his priority is to make sure, he's just being America's accountant ... This is the same guy that voted for two wars that were unpaid for, voted for the Bush tax cuts that were unpaid for, voted for the prescription drug bill that cost as much as my health care bill--but wasn't paid for," Obama reportedly said.

6. Exactly... The title on this OP made me think
he got caught cussing them out behind their back or something. This isn't anything he shouldn't be saying in public. Loudly. Every day.

16. The story is meant to make us feel like we've been taken into his confidence.
It's like celebrity gossip reported by someone's cleaner, imo.

7. Exactly,
God knows the GOP has said as much, if not worse, out loud on their own.

Fight back. You've got the bully pulpit. Use it.

13. The president seems to be intent on denying the GOP a big target.
The problem is, that usually looks like not showing up to the battle.

18. I agree. This is good stuff, not some "fuck yourself" mumbling...
... like Cheney's off-the-record remarks.

The facts about two wars -- unpaid for -- and the prescription drug plan -- unpaid for -- and the Bush tax cuts -- unpaid for -- is gold and SHOULD be repeated loud and often. In a nutshell: Tax & Spend is responsible. Just spending is utterly irresponsible.

23. In some cases, the 'forbidden fruit'
effect of a 'leaked' statement can supercharge your message, in the media viral sense.

12. Agreed. He's too smart not to know that if a reporter left a microphone behind,
that was probably "accidentally on purpose," too. Every microphone is always recording--politicians live and die by that rule.

24. Really? Then why not say it in public?
Why make it look like he's talking behind their back? Am I missing some great strategy here?

Why not put his fucking cards on the table? I can't see a single reason not to say what he did out loud.

Personally I'd be saying more than that but that's why I'm not President.

29. It's not about 'saying it in public'
It's about making sure our 'if it bleeds it leads' media bites the apple.
And forbidden fruit is always the most appealing to these worms.

32. There's some sort of mystic surrounding catching a politician accidentally on a live mic
The media and the public love it. It's the sort of thing which is spoken about far more than any public statement made by a politician. Which tends to go in one ear and out the other of most of the population.

Here's a few examples:

POLITICIANS CAUGHT ACCIDENTALLY TELLING THE TRUTH.... Incidents surrounding live mics are some of my favorites -- unexpected candor can be revealing.

Take this gem out of Iowa, for example. (thanks to Blue Girl for the tip)

A snafu during a legislative debate where a microphone was turned on captured banter between two Iowa GOP leaders, who also joked about a "give-a-handgun-to-a-schizophrenic bill."

Republicans this week revived a proposal that would allow Iowans to carry weapons in public without permission from a sheriff, without background checks and without training requirements.

The conversation was between some of the top leaders of the Iowa State House. The Assistant Majority Leader asked about the bill known as "Alaska carry," unclear on what it is. The Speaker Pro Tem responded, "The crazy, give-a-handgun-to-a-schizophrenic bill."

Classic gaffes caught on microphone

Gordon Brown is not the first politician or public figure to be caught on microphone saying something he later regrets - here are seven other examples.

JOHN MAJOR - 'THE BASTARDS'
In 1993, with the Conservative Party tearing itself apart over Europe, Prime Minister John Major vented his anger with three Cabinet colleagues at the end of an interview with ITN's Michael Brunson. Not realising his microphone was still on, the mild-mannered Mr Major turned the air blue, calling them "bastards" that he would "crucify". He also went on to air his views about the sex scandals that had been rocking his party, saying: "Even as an ex-Whip I can't stop people sleeping with other people if they ought not." And then, turning to his own performance as PM, he pondered "how such a complete wimp like me keeps winning everything".

GEORGE BUSH - 'YO BLAIR'
There are several to choose from with former US President George Bush, but perhaps the most telling was when he appeared to greet his old ally Tony Blair at a G8 summit with the immortal words "Yo, Blair. How are you doing?" . The tape is indistinct and some people dispute he used those words, but he does go on to discuss how to put pressure on Syria to halt attacks on Israel by Lebanese militant group Hezbollah: "See the irony is that what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's over." The ever media-savvy Blair put a stop to the media eavesdropping when he spotted the live microphone and switched it off.

The famously gaffe-prone president gets a second entry, for the time on the 2000 election campaign trail when microphones caught his whispered attack on New York Times reporter Adam Clymer. Mr Bush described the reporter as a "major-league asshole" , to which Dick Cheney replied: "Yeah, big time." Mr Bush later explained the gaffe away. "I said what I said. I'm a plainspoken fellow."

GOP Politician Caught Talking About Extramarital Affairs
A Conservative family values member of the California GOP, Michael Duvall, was caught on a live mic going on about 2 affairs he’s currently having.

The language in Obama's "incident" isn't on par with the other incidents of this type. It appears to be a way to get the media to attack it like a rabid terrier. However, that's just my opinion.

20. He didn't say anything that was so incendiary....
...he did utter a lot of truth. As another person here said - he could have said these things on the podium during his speech. Nothing to make hay about - though I'm sure the corprat-owned Republican-loyal media will try.

31. Say it in public
When you don't say that kind of thing in public, people take your silence as COMPLICITY WITH THE REPUBLICANS! And then they think you're not on their side, and they don't vote for you.

God.
