Former U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra said today he won't challenge Sen. Debbie Stabenow next year for her U.S. Senate seat.
"After serious consideration and many discussions with friends and supporters, Diane and I have made the decision that I will not be a candidate for the United States Senate in 2012," Hoekstra said in a morning email to supporters. "… We agreed that it was not in the best interest of our family at this time to enter the race."
The announcement came just days after Stabenow filed reports with the Federal Elections Commission showing she has raised more than $1 million in the first quarter of this year, leaving her with more than $3 million in cash on hand.
Hoekstra's exit from the race leaves the GOP without a widely recognized challenger to Stabenow, D-Lansing. Former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has said she'd consider running, but would wait for Hoekstra to make an announcement before she decides whether to launch a campaign.
