10. This is very insightful
These experts are interested in being responsible for the health of Americans. Unlike the NRC apparently.

12. The process to certify a plant by the NRC
is just insane... send us a few forms.... no wonder Adm. Rickover refused to work with it's predecessor once he left the Navy... Oh and none of this would pass NAVAL muster.

13. NOw discussing how fubar the emergency plans are for nuke plans here.
James DeWitt wrote the plans, in 1973..
evacuation would be impossible, given number of people, condition of roads, no plans for what to do with people after evacuation, etc.

14. Do you know how reactors are certified?? Some body signs a piece of paper. That's it.
No one inspects the reactors.
No one signs off on anything specific to the actual plant.

so says Arnie Gunderson.

19. Damn watching this makes me more afraid
that the only reason an accident has not happened here after TMI... is the grace of God.

My lord, planing is not there.
Paperwork to get your permit going (No wonder Naval Reactors HATE the civilian counterparts... none of them would pass muster)
Disaster planning, that is a nice theory.

Yep, this needs to go the way of the dodo... we have OTHER ways of producing energy... and safer ways of boiling water to drive a turbine...

20. The NRC is controlled and funded by the nuclear energy industry
The villain is also the sheriff.

104 reactors in the US, 24 are of the same design as those at Fukushima.

4 reactors in CA are located upon active fault lines.

The NRC considers "10 miles" as an acceptable maximum evacuation zone should any reactor in the US experience a criticality. This despite the 50 mile limit recommended for US citizens living in Japan and working/residing nearby the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.

Most members of Congress and their families do not live or work nearby a nuclear reactor, so they don't consider making these reactors more safe and secure a priority. Color me unsurprised.

There are no current/immediate plans to transfer thousands of very tightly packed and aging spent fuel rods stored in cooling pools within or nearby US reactors, into dry cask storage, and even if they were, there of course is/are no places to ship them to (ie..no Yucca mountain) and because they are so tightly packed, most cannot be inspected for possible damage, temperature, corrosion, or leaks..Yikes!!

The US has an "ostrich sticking its head in the sand" approach to creating and devising cohesive, organized, led, coordinated and detailed plans dealing with regional or national emergencies of any kind. The Katrina debacle is a perfect example of that, FEMA is a fucking joke.
