Michigan just slipped into dictatorship. Will of the people be damned. PROTESTS planned links
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 07:18 PM by Snoutport
Michigan has truly slipped into dictatorship. One of their counties emergency managers has pretty much suspended democtratic rule. The will of the people has been overthrown by a dictator appointed, basically, by a fascist.

Just as the Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Robert Bobb announced that he is going to use his powers to pretty much gut the unions.

Welcome to Tea Party America.

Now, how do we help Michigan get out of this mess?

1. Massive civil disobedience seems to be the only way out now
whether enough of the population is un-brainwashed/un-hypnotized for that remains to be seen.

2. Step one, take this to court,
See if it withstands the test of whether or not it is Constitutional. If it does, then that will be a sad statement of the shape our country is in.

5. It will probably not surprise you to learn that Benton Harbor is heavily African American.
Over 90 percent, in fact. Do you seriously think this would ever happen in Royal Oak or Grosse Pointe?

10. Well, they no longer have a say in the democratic process.
Taxation without representation?
Loss of civil rights and liberties?
Closure of their schools while the rich kids are doing fine with their vouchers.

I hope they go into the streets. To not do so says Democracy has failed.

15. Excellent point.
An evil plan, to be sure.

I am deeply stunned that such an idea could even be imagined, in this day and age.
I think we have been severely been underestimating the seriousness of these Reich Wing nutz.

29. It doesn't surprise me
The winter I was 9, I read all the books in the local library about the Holocaust. Since then, I have kept up my interest in Nazi Germany and have read plenty of books about it.

I recognized fascism in 2000. So I've been expecting this for over 10 years. And we have only ourselves to blame - we should have gone out into the streets when Bush stole the election.

26. Robert Bobb was hired by Granholm
Why?

And there was a weaker version of this very same Emergency Financial Manager prior to the Republicans taking over?

So the Republicans just took a bad idea, kept some of the same people, and ran with it?

Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 09:27 PM by Starry Messenger
This has nothing to do with the tea party. He's been in Detroit all year doing ugly shit and the outgoing Dem governor appointed him a while ago. Union busting is bipartisan.

28. I know that Phelps is.
But Bobb is mainstream. Bobb was city manager of Oakland when I lived there. CA dems tend to be rather more conservative then people might think. We don't have that populist/labor thing that Dems in other states seem to have.

33. Googled Benton Harbor
Edited on Sat Apr-16-11 12:10 AM by MedleyMisty
Found this very interesting article from 2003.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0620/p01s04-ussc.html

It's been called the longest bridge in the world. Not that the St. Joseph River is particularly wide, but the gulf of status, stereotypes, and distrust it represents needs more than steel and cable to cross it.

On one side lies St. Joseph, an Eden-like beach town, brimming with barbered lawns, boutique coffee shops, and summer art festivals. Cross to Benton Harbor, and everything changes. White becomes black, and affluence turns to poverty. Frustrated residents sit on sagging stoops and walk by boarded-up businesses.

When Benton Harbor erupted in violence this week, the trigger was ostensibly a high-speed police chase through a residential neighborhood. It was the second such pursuit in three years, and the second to result in the death of a young black.

But as with most riots, this is a story that goes much deeper than the immediate event that lit the fuse. It's about years of pent-up frustration over that gulf that separates Benton Harbor from St. Joseph. Over the sense most Benton Harbor residents have that a fair trial is impossible in Berrien County, which encompasses both towns, and that the police force engages in practices - like high-speed chases - that would be unheard of across the river. Over the accumulated anger of being pulled over by cops too often, of having job applications rejected before they were glanced at, of the assumptions that if you live in Benton Harbor, you must be a drug dealer, a criminal, a drop-out.

"What's going on now goes back way further than my age, than your age," says Sammie Kemp, a young black man with a large silver cross around his neck, as he watches police in riot gear and assault rifles swarm his neighborhood. Mr. Kemp lives just a few blocks from where the two nights of rioting occurred, in which hundreds of people burst into the streets after a tense City Hall meeting, burning as many as a dozen buildings, overturning cars, and clashing with authorities.

Please, please, let it erupt again. But this time it needs to be controlled peaceful civil disobedience.

Does anyone have any contacts there or a way to get in touch with anyone there? They need to start organizing. And they need Twitter and YouTube and cell phones and internet access, which I imagine is somewhat scarce there. Someone needs to provide these things.

Do this right, and we could have the beginning of our Tahrir. Organize, be peaceful, be strong, be present, and get the information and the video out to the world. I don't have the resources myself to do this, but hopefully someone who reads this post will be able to do something.

And we need demonstrations in support of them all over the country. Get the word out, to everyone that you know. Get pictures and video of the solidarity demos out on the net. To everyone that you know.

We cannot let this pass.

34. Talk about putting an African American community in the back of the bus.
If someone told me my elected officials were being usurped by an appointee who was not elected nor applied for the job, I sure the hell would be in the streets.
