Here's hoping that periodic reflections upon US history can serve as reminders that genocide, institutional slavery & economic oppression are as much a part of our heritage as the 'shining city on a hill,' 'beacon of democracy' claptrap.
Germany and Japan were able to come to terms with their history following WW II, changing their constitutions, societies and economies to reflect their determination to evolve into less racist, oppressive, warlike societies. Too many in our society look back upon antebellum days a bit too fondly; it's a schism that never healed and was in fact exacerbated by the haphazard, heavy-handed tactics used during Reformation - a schism that still becomes inflamed 150 years after the fact. I feel that this schism could play a pivotal role, in some form or another, in societal breakdowns to come.
