Dilbert Creator Pretends to Be His Own Biggest Fan on Message Boards
Dilbert Creator Pretends to Be His Own Biggest Fan on Message Boards

Adrian Chen — Scott Adams, creator of the great comic strip Dilbert, is sort of a prick. He is a horrible boss, and recently penned a charming misogynist rant comparing women to children begging for candy. Now we learn he likes to bash critics on message boards under a pseudonym.

For months, Adams has been pretending to be the world's biggest Scott Adams fan under the handle "PlannedChaos." (Planned Chaos is a book by Austrian economist and libertarian hero Ludwig von Mises.) Today, he fessed up to his sockpuppetry.

It started with a thread on link-sharing community MetaFilter about Adams' Wall Street Journal op-ed on how awesome and successful he is even though he didn't get straight-As in school. Some people said mean things about the article, suggesting Scott Adams wrote like someone who has "actually convinced himself… that he's the smartest guy in the room."

That's when "PlannedChaos" weighed in, furiously defending Adams:

As far as Adams' ego goes, maybe you don't understand what a writer does for a living. No one writes unless he believes that what he writes will be interesting to someone. Everyone on this page is talking about him, researching him, and obsessing about him. His job is to be interesting, not loved. As someone mentioned, he has a certified genius I.Q., and that's hard to hide.

1. Can't draw anyhow
Gotta be the worst cartoonist ever. And his stuff hasn't gotten any better over the years. Most cartoonists get better year by year. Not him. And apparently he gets most of his jokes from write ins from office-dwelling fans. His books are nothing but rehashes and reprints of the same crap published in the newspapers. All you can really say is some of his fans are pretty funny. Too bad he doesn't let them draw the pictures as well.B-)

2. He's a right wing hack who draws a B rated strip
It's probably good he sticks to office politics instead of government politics in Dilbert.
...and fix that godammed necktie, it's ammoying.

4. If he's so smart why can't he see that the same things that make the business office
dysfunctional are being introduced into government by the Republican party?

5. Thank You, Norman Solomon, For Waking Me Up To This Guy
The red pill for me was the book "The Trouble With Dilbert" by AlterNet's Norman Solomon. He cut through the whole thing like a vorpal blade, revealing Scott Adams as, at best, a cynical opportunist and, at worst, a greedy hypocrite. The guy has really convinced a whole lot of people that he's laughing with them when he's sneering at them with ultimate disdain, the only real sincere thing in his life being the desire to transfer as much money from your pocket to his bank account as possible.

After reading that book I'm not surprised that Scott Adams sockpuppets - only even more disgusted at him.

The rest of you ought to get that book I mentioned above, if you haven't already.

6. Wow...He seemed decent enough when he hit it big in the 90s
WHEN did he become such an unrepentant assclown??

I looked up the deleted misogynist rant, and it's much worse than I thought...Isn't there some disconnect with one of the geek culture icons re-imagining himself as a viking or something??

7. His strips are a waste of newspaper space
Fortunately many papers have moved his drivel from the comics page to the business section.

8. From PZ Myers' blog:
Why sockpuppetry is stupid
Category: Stupidity

Because when you're exposed, you look like an even more gargantuan idiot and pathetic narcissist. Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, has been discovered to have tried to pad his reputation with a fake ID … he's used the pseudonym "PlannedChaos" to go around the web praising Scott Adams as a "certified genius".

You know, it's a good rule of thumb that if you have to announce that you're a genius, you aren't a genius.

I've been remarking on Adams' stupidity for years. He's a creationist apologist who doesn't understand science, and the kind of insipid apologist for religion who thinks Pascal's wager is a good argument. It's no surprise that he had to cobble up imaginary sycophants to make himself look good.

And then, of course, there's the classic, standard Adams riposte whenever he's exposed as a fool. Sure, he said something stupid, he'll say, but he did it because he's funny and you are even dumber for taking him seriously. It's no surprise that that is his response now.

I'm sorry I peed in your cesspool. For what it's worth, the smart people were on to me after the first post. That made it funnier.

That schtick wore out ages ago.
