Pope served with court papers in molestation case
Pope served with court papers in molestation case

It is official, the Pope and two top Vatican officials have been served with court papers associated with the Milwaukee-area school for the deaf molestation case in which 200 deaf children were alleged to have been molested by Reverend Lawrence C. Murphy between 1950 and 1974.

The plaintiff’s lawyer, Jeff Anderson, confirmed yesterday (April 12th) that the lawsuit has been going through official channels and that the Vatican has received notice of the suit last week. The suit alleges that the Pope and two other top Vatican officials knew about the accusations of sexual molestation and called off investigations.

--snip--

In the past, the Pope and Vatican officials were immune from such lawsuits under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976. However, in June of last year the Supreme Court declined to hear a Vatican appeal to a Ninth Circuit ruling that the Vatican can be held accountable for priest’s actions under the “tort exceptions” clause of the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976 under certain conditions.

1. Perhaps now people will finally get some truth
Too bad the church is so interested in protecting the church and forgetting god can take care of himself.
And if their god can not take care of himself them they have been telling lies all these years

3. Umm well I guess God should have warned the Pope... maybe he was too busy
tending to the kid who stabbed himself to prove he is real. One thing at a time in the supernatural world methinks.

14. NYT and AP both have reported it.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/13/us/13brfs-VATICANGETSN_BRF.html

The Vatican has been served with court papers stemming from decades-old accusations of sexual abuse against a now-dead priest at a Milwaukee-area school for the deaf, the State Department says. In a news release Tuesday, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Jeff Anderson, said the lawsuit was filed through official channels. An adviser with the State Department confirmed that the Vatican received the documents last week. The suit was filed nearly a year ago in federal court. It claims Pope Benedict XVI and two other top Vatican officials knew about accusations of sexual abuse at the school and called off internal punishment of the accused priest.

16.  last week
not really all that old for news. My guess is it got buried.

It's obvious you are very faithful with your religion, and I'm glad it works for you, but you seem to be hiding your head in the sand on this.

23. Do you have a reading problem?
Second paragraph.

"The plaintiff’s lawyer, Jeff Anderson, confirmed yesterday (April 12th) that the lawsuit has been going through official channels and that the Vatican has received notice of the suit last week. The suit alleges that the Pope and two other top Vatican officials knew about the accusations of sexual molestation and called off investigations."

You seem reluctant to accept that this has happened at all, much like your church has done.

17. 4 days is not that old.
Not everyone would have seen this, I don't think it's that bad.

And one has to wonder how many priests have engaged in this behavior, because it seems that there was a real effort to hide it. Why?
