Drained after another marathon surgery session, Dr Ramadan Atewah shook his head at the callousness of the shelling carried by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's forces.

"Now they are using cluster bombs on us," he said. "The only aim of this is to terrify and kill civilians. Children especially are vulnerable because they think the bomblets are toys."

Dr Atewah, a 55-year-old Libyan who normally works as an NHS surgeon in Britain, was speaking to The Sunday Telegraph from the rebel-held city of Misurata, where Gaddafi's forces have kept a relentless siege over the past month.

Not content with deploying tanks, rockets, and snipers, the Libyan dictator has now taken to using cluster bombs - a weapon banned in most countries because of the risk they pose of indiscriminate injury.

Ramadan Atewah is a hero, please read the rest of the article, as it covers just what Gaddafi's war is like. Gaddafi has no stragetic reason to attack Misrata. He only does so because he percieves it as the weakest link, dividing east from west. It is clear now to me that he wants to split Libya.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/libya-video/8455768/Burning-wreckage-in-Misurata.html">Burning wreckage in Misurata - video
The rebel held town has been under renewed attack from forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi for the last few days.

Earlier footage had shown explosions in the city and this video shows what appears to be the remnants of a Libyan government tank with a rebel soldier smiling and posing in front of it.

The redoubling of Gaddafi's efforts to control Misurata comes amidst rebel complaints that Nato is not doing enough to stop him.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/apr/16/gaddafi-forces-intensify-attacks-misrata">Gaddafi forces intensify bombardment on residents of Misrata
Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi have continued their heavy bombardment of residential areas of Misrata amid mounting concern that the army has fired cluster bombs into the besieged rebel stronghold.

At least 100 Soviet-designed Grad rocket rockets were fired into the eastern city today, a rebel spokesman said. "They fired Grads at an industrial area this morning, at least one hundred rockets were fired. No casualties are reported," Abdelbasset Abu Mzereiq told Reuters.

...

The intensifying bombardment came as Human Rights Watch reported that four cluster bombs exploded in the city yesterday and on Thursday, and two Libyan residents of Misrata told the Guardian that they suspected the munitions, banned in most countries, were being used. Cluster bombs explode in midair, indiscriminately throwing out dozens of high-explosive bomblets which cause damage and injuries over a large area. The submunitions often fail to explode on impact but detonate when stepped on or picked up.

...

The use of cluster bombs had further weakened Gaddafi's position, Dannatt added. "If we thought that Gaddafi had lost the moral right to rule this country a month ago, he has lost it in the last 24 hours, that's for sure."

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/04/20114168572393746.html">Rebel-held Libyan city pounded
...

Meanwhile, a Red Cross team arrived in Misurata on Saturday to assess the situation.

Aid groups have described an increasingly desperate situation for many trapped civilians in the city, with few areas safe from the daily bombardment by government forces and growing needs of food and medical supplies.

...

Rockets were fired into Misurata on Friday as well, killing at least eight people, a local doctor told Al Jazeera.

He said seven other civilians, including children and older people, were wounded in that attack. Residents of Misurata told Al Jazeera around 120 rockets pounded the city.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/apr/16/libya-muammar-gaddafi">Nato must send in troops to save Misrata, say rebels
The city that has become the epicentre of a desperate battle by Libyan rebels against forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi came under renewed pounding today amid mounting evidence of the use of cluster bombs against the besieged civilian population and calls for Nato to send in ground troops.

More than 100 rockets had been fired on opposition-held areas of Misrata by mid-morning and there were "raging battles" in two strategically key streets, according to rebels. The assault added pressure on the city's beleaguered hospitals, which are already overwhelmed with appalling injuries and a rising death toll. Most of the casualties are civilians, and they include many women and children, say doctors.

TV pictures showed scenes of devastation and desperation from inside the city – Libya's third largest, home to around 300,000 people – which has been under intense attack for seven weeks.

The above link is to an overview of why Obama's implementation of the NFZ and R2P is perfectly legal under the law. I will not post it entirely here, however, all objections come down to the misinformed position that Obama, by using forces in Libya, was invoking Article 43 of the United Nations. This is wrong. Obama invoked Article 42, which does not require congressional approval to implement. Proof of this is that Article 43 has http://www.un.org/en/sc/repertoire/actions.shtml#rel5">never been used.

It goes like this: The US law (Title 22, Chap. 7, Subchap. XIV § 287d) grants the President the right to invoke UN Article 42 http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode22/usc_sec_22_00000287---d000-.html">without authorization, the War Powers Act (Title 50, Chap. 33 § 1541) grants the President permission to act without authorization under http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/50/1541–1548.html">"specific statutory authorization" which, by definition, is what 287d does. § 1543 of the War Powers Act requires the President to report to Congress, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/obama_explains_libya_mission_to_congress/2011/03/03/ABU9377_blog.html">which he did. One can argue all day and night about the legality of the War Powers Act, doesn't change the fact that under the law as it is written, the President acted within the law.

Fortunately, the Council wasn't made-in-the-USA or manufactured by another foreign power. Rather it came into existence, a month ago, at Libyans' own initiative, soon after the winds of revolutionary change blew Libya's way, and after its people rose to the occasion with pride and courage.

During weeks of reporting in Benghazi and along the chaotic, shifting front line, I’ve spent a great deal of time with these volunteers. The hard core of the fighters has been the shabab—the young people whose protests in mid-February sparked the uprising. They range from street toughs to university students (many in computer science, engineering, or medicine), and have been joined by unemployed hipsters and middle-aged mechanics, merchants, and storekeepers. There is a contingent of workers for foreign companies: oil and maritime engineers, construction supervisors, translators. There are former soldiers, their gunstocks painted red, green, and black—the suddenly ubiquitous colors of the pre-Qaddafi Libyan flag.

The interim national council, formed by opposition groups in Libya, has said it will hold free and fair elections and draft a national constitution. Here is its eight-point plan in full.

Mohammed Nabbous, killed by Gaddafi's forces while trying to report on the massacre in Benghazi

"I'm not afraid to die, I'm afraid to lose the battle" -Mohammed Nabbous, a month ago when all this began

I'm struggling to come up with something to say about this man. I was not aware of the Libyan uprising until I saw Mo's first report, begging for help, posted here on DU. I was stricken. Here was a man giving everything he had to explain a situation that clearly terrified him, I would not call him a coward in that moment, but you could see the fear in his eyes, and desperation in his voice. For 30 days Nabbous would spend many hours covering the uprising in Benghazi. For many nights I would go to sleep with the webcast of Benghazi live on my computer screen, looking to it occasionally to be sure it was still 'there.' Mo treated the chat room as if we were his friends, and in some way, we were. I never signed up to LiveStream to thank him for all his work and it seems somewhat shallow to do so now, given that I was a lurker for so long. Ever since I took over posting these threads "Libya Alhurra" has been linked as a source of information. It wasn't until last night, when I posted, and twitter posted on Mo's adventures out into Benghazi to try to determine the truth of the situation, that Mo's webchannel became a hit, over 2000 people were watching him stream live. This was curious to him because he'd done many reports like this in the past but he appeared somewhat bemused that the view count exploded as it did. Last night Mo became a star. This is a man who first started out with a webcast replete with fear and desperation finally overcoming that aspect of himself and losing that fear, to become someone who was a fighter for the resistance just as much as those who held the guns. Reporting on the front lines of Benghazi became his final act, and for that he should never, ever be forgotten. I'm so sorry Mo that I never got to know you better.

Mo's first report, which many of you may remember, begging for help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38EXALI60hg

Mo's last report, a fallen hero trying to spread the word to the world: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecu_iWLn-rg

Mo leaves behind a wife who is with child, she had http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/03/23/a_bright_voice_from_libyas_darkness">this to say about the No Fly Zone and R2P UN resolution:

We started this in a pure way, but he turned it bloody. Thousands of our men, women, and children have died. We just wanted our freedom, that's all we wanted, we didn't want power. Before, we could not do a single thing if it was not the way he wanted it. All we wanted was freedom. All we wanted was to be free. We have paid with our blood, with our families, with our men, and we're not going to give up. We are still going to do that no matter what it takes, but we need help. We want to do this ourselves, but we don't have the weapons, the technology, the things we need. I don't want anyone to say that Libya got liberated by anybody else. If NATO didn't start moving when they did, I assure you, I assure you, half of Benghazi if not more would have been killed. If they stop helping us, we are going to be all killed because he has no mercy anymore.

Leaving Moussa Koussa at liberty may be the price we pay for ensuring the departure of Gadaffi, says Alasdair Palmer.

'If he had become a professor or a social planner, he would have done very well.” Christopher Vanderpool was speaking of Moussa Koussa, whom he taught when the Libyan was a harmless sociology student at Michigan State University in the 1970s.

Albert Speer, Hitler’s armaments minister, was once asked whether, if he had his life again, he would choose to be like his father – an average, anonymous architect in a provincial German town – rather than becoming what he actually was: the servant of one of the most evil, destructive and murderous men who has ever lived. After a long pause, Speer answered: “You have to understand the irresistible fascination of power.”

5. Battle for Libya: Rebel forces advance to west - video (AJE)
12:38am Anti-aircraft fire and explosions have been heard in the Libyan capital Tripoli, however, it is not clear who exactly is being targeted in the attacks.

Meanwhile, NATO has continued its air assault on Muammar Gaddaffi's forces in the eastern town of Brega.
Rebel forces are reportedly advancing on the oil town, as they push on from nearby Ajdabiya.
"On a dirt track off the main Brega highway doctors and a surgeon prepare for the next wave of casualties despite all the talk of help on the international stage … people are still dying here every day," Sue Turton, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Brega, said.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/world/africa/17misurata.html?_r=1&hp">Pinned Down in Battered City, Libyan Rebels Endure With Grit and Dirt
MISURATA, Libya — Muftah Militan, a rebel with his wounded right arm in a sling and a two-way radio in his left hand, peered from a rooftop at a low-slung skyline. Occasional gunfire chattered below.

To the right, several blocks away, the bright green flag of the government of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi fluttered above a building that had been cracked and scarred by fighting. This was a headquarters of the pro-Qaddafi forces besieging this city.

To the left, another tall building, also pockmarked by fire, rose above the neighborhood. “Snipers are there,” Mr. Militan said, unwilling to venture into the open.

Between these buildings runs a long and shattered stretch of Tripoli Street, formerly one of Misurata’s main thoroughfares, now one of its main battlegrounds. The street and the adjacent blocks are a ribbon-shaped wasteland of scattered debris, shattered facades and bloodstains.

17. "That's music," he said, referring to an RPG blast 50 yards away, "our music."
As he spoke, in a doorway, long bursts of gunfire snapped by. A few mortar rounds landed a few buildings away. Then a rocket-propelled grenade slammed into a wall about 50 yards away. It exploded, and shrapnel fell to the street. He seemed not to care.

“That’s music,” Mr. Hamid said. “Our music.”

Mr. Hamid’s calm demeanor framed another evident difference between the rebels fighting for the roads and oil infrastructure of the eastern desert and those fighting to keep Misurata.

In eastern Libya, the rebels have retreated under fire repeatedly, and panic has moved through their ranks like a contagion. Here the fighters have stubbornly held ground. On Saturday they emanated a visible calm.

Difference: Misrata has been under siege for 6 weeks. Benghazi only had two infiltrations, is very very far from the front lines, and overall has not had to endure what the people of Misrata have had to endure. Misrata will be under siege for a very long long time, with or without NATO involvement, with or without international actions. Misrata will be known as this centuries "Siege of Sarajevo."

Libya’s rebels and NATO forces have established a joint operations room, said the spokesman of the National Transitional Council, Abdul Hafiz Ghoga. This was reported Saturday evening by Agence-France Presse.

“There is a joint operations room,” Mr. Ghoga told a news conference in Benghazi. He was replying to a question on coordination between NATO and the council’s forces that are fighting the troops of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi. He declined to give more details.

Meanwhile, Libyan rebels are engaged in a fierce battle in the strategic oil town of Brega, and are hopeful of capturing the oil port soon, their military spokesman told Al Arabiya television late on Friday.

Our situation is very good, thank God. Today we began advancing toward Brega, and there is now a big and fierce battle in Brega, and we have high hopes that Brega will be ours in the coming few hours,” a rebel spokesman, General Abdel Fattah Younes, said to Al Arabiya.

This video purportedly shows Gaddafi troops entering the outskirts of Benghazi on March 19, the day foreign airstrikes began.

A resident from Benghazi received this footage from one of his friends and has chosen to share it with Al Jazeera. They believe the clip was taken off a dead Gaddafi soldier.

Al Jazeera has not been able to independently verify these accounts or this footage.

19. Same day, yeah. :(
They infiltrated and even had snipers on rooftops in Benghazi. It took days to get rid of them, Mo was reporting on the siege which the French stopped it. Too late for Mo though. Watching him go out as things were getting sketchy I was really worrying for him, but I know he had a deep sense of wanting to tell the story, and that was hard for him to shake. There's just that kind of personality.

28. All, I can say is that I would not like to have been on the receiving end of that.
And some people like to claim that there never would have been a massacre at Benghazi.

I wonder if there can be any cross-identification with the long line of military gear, video.

30. The full picture will bore out, I guess, in a few months.
It's going to be tragic, the books, the historical record, it's going to be quite interesting to read. And yes, I'll even read the "pro-Gaddafi" left wing anti-war stuff, as I'm sure neither side is playing nice. But it's going to be difficult to find a book that is credible that says Gaddafi's side was "nicer."

As rumors go this appears to be one of the more credible ones, but it's mostly twitter right now.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/africa/4898123/Libyas-children-main-victims-of-bombs">Libya's children 'main victims' of bombs
Rebels said Muammar Gaddafi's forces targeted food industry plants in renewed bombardment of Misrata on Saturday, a day after a Western rights group accused his loyalists of using cluster bombs in the besieged city.

A doctor in Misrata told Al Jazeera television that children were "the main victims of the cluster bombs".

"They appear as wounds all over the body, penetrations all over the body, eyes, head, and they rupture the surface tissue," Mohamed Al-Faqih, a doctor at Misrata medical centre, said.

Libya's government denies it is using such weapons.

http://cjchivers.com/post/4667042303/more-on-the-spanish-cluster-munitions-in-libya">More on the Spanish Cluster Munitions in Libya.
This is the expended container of a MAT-120 round, fired from a mortar tube, that held 21 high-explosive submunitions scattered onto Misurata, Libya. Evidence of MAT-120 strikes is readily available here in Misurata, where they have been fired repeatedly.

The New York Times first identified these munitions and published information about their use in the Libyan war yesterday. Since then, several readers have asked me on email or on Twitter how these weapons, which Spain itself banned in 2008, came into the possession of the forces of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

This is a very good question. Unfortunately, I can’t turn my attention to this, as much as I would like to. Our brief now is to cover the war here on the ground, and there are not enough hours each day for even that. My hope is that other investigative journalists and or organizations will take on the questions of how the Qaddafi forces’ MAT-120s moved from Spain to here.

Look at the photo above, it shows that this particular round was the third production batch of 2007. Other MAT-120 components from other strikes carried markings saying they were part of the second production batch of the same year.

Direct proof of cluster munitions being used in Misrata against the people.

http://www.thelibertyunderground.net/2011/04/what-you-didnt-know-about-bahrain.html">What You Didn't Know about Bahrain
A CNN crew recently went to Bahrain to cover a story about Middle East activists, bloggers and revolutions. But, most of the sources who had agreed to talk haven't been found. Family members or others close to them confirmed that they have been arrested or gone into hiding after their house were raided by security forces. The air planes heading to Bahrain were mostly empty. No tourists in the hotel. Strict curfews and military checkpoints were imposed on the empty streets. According to CNN reporter, Amber Lyon

Although, there were no signs of protests, we were to found out that the unrest here has not ended. It's just been silenced. People with injuries during the protests refused to go hospitals fearing their lives and resorted to treatment at home

According to human rights workers, security forces continue to raid houses in the night taking the opposition away one by one at gunpoint.

This is exactly what happened in Tripoli and more importantly, Az Zawaiya.

More so than in the other revolutions - it's not like there's cultured seemingly sane pro-Gaddafi people interacting normally with reporters and bloggers on Twitter, for instance. And the pro-gov Bahrain people definitely have the sound of upper middle class and higher people who don't understand why the poor people have to be so rowdy.

Reading about this stuff, and then going and reading their tweets about the rule of law and how the protesters should just sit down and be quiet and their smears of the woman who is on a hunger strike after the men in her family were arrested, interspersed with stuff about their cars and lunches and shopping and friends and going to Kuwait for dinner....ugh. Just ugh.

The walls of Benghazi, Libya are in many places tagged with revolutionary graffiti. This blog posted a frame of one especially well-done tag a few days ago, of Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi. And these two drew my eye, too, this afternoon. They are much more simple than the portrait of the colonel, but resonant nonetheless.

The first one, above, is a reminder that however the rebellion fares, and whatever its flaws, at the street level it has an authenticity, and a clarity, that gives it energy.

The second tag, below, also stopped me in place. Whether intentional or an accident, the phrase (properly transliterated in the headline of this post) forms a near perfect double entendre for the uncertain situation here.

34. The Independent: Misrata becomes Libya's Stalingrad
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/misrata-becomes-libyas-stalingrad-2269008.html">Misrata becomes Libya's Stalingrad
The "dawn chorus" came in on time, salvos of missiles crashing down with shattering noise, burning buildings, killing and maiming people. It was the start of another day in Misrata, the city whose fate may decide the military outcome of this brutal civil war.

The besieged and battered bastion has become Libya's Stalingrad. The fall of Misrata would not only be a huge symbolic and psychological triumph for Muammar Gaddafi, but also end significant opposition to his rule in the west of the country.

It is this defiance and determination only 150 miles from where he sits in Tripoli that seem to enrage the dictator of Libya. The daily rocket and artillery attacks are vengeful and often indiscriminate, destroying homes and killing and maiming civilians. More than 200 attacks have been launched in the past 48 hours, killing 40 people and injuring 105 others.

Even by the standards of Misrata, the bombardment at the end of the week was particularly brutal. Missiles landed in residential areas, on a school, and in a street on which a queue outside a bakery had formed. Some people waiting for bread escaped the initial onslaught and fled to a garage that promised protection. But the next round hit the entrance, starting a fire from which they could not escape. Among those to die was a mother aged 33 and her two daughters, both under 10.

The Independent, ladies and gentlemen. I'll wait for Turborama to post this in LBN. Wow.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/04/16/uk-libya-idUKLDE71Q0MP20110416">Libyan rebels make renewed push for oil port Brega
(Reuters) - Libyan rebels made a renewed effort to push towards the oil port of Brega on Saturday while Muammar Gaddafi's forces pounded besieged Misrata to the west with rockets and mortars, a rebel spokesman said.

Underlining the difficulties faced by the rebels, six were killed and 16 wounded when Gaddafi loyalists fired rockets at a group of insurgents driving along the exposed coastal' highway from the town of Ajdabiyah west towards Brega.

The rebels' attempt to fight their way into western Libya -- which would eventually allow them to link up with comrades in Misrata -- has ground to a halt along the eastern coastal stretch from Ajdabiyah to Brega, despite NATO air strikes.

Rebels said some fighters had set up positions on the outskirts of Brega, but with their forces exposed to attacks on the highway -- and often fleeing back in response -- they were unable to send more men forward to dislodge Gaddafi loyalists in the town centre.

44. NATO runs short on some munitions in Libya
Less than a month into the Libyan conflict, NATO is running short of precision bombs, highlighting the limitations of Britain, France and other European countries in sustaining even a relatively small military action over an extended period of time, according to senior NATO and U.S. officials.

The shortage of European munitions, along with the limited number of aircraft available, has raised doubts among some officials about whether the United States can continue to avoid returning to the air campaign if Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi hangs on to power for several more months.

.........

But, they said, the current bombing rate by the participating nations is not sustainable. “The reason we need more capability isn’t because we aren’t hitting what we see — it’s so that we can sustain the ability to do so. One problem is flight time, the other is munitions,” said another official, one of several who were not authorized to discuss the issue on the record.

European arsenals of laser-guided bombs, the NATO weapon of choice in the Libyan campaign, have been quickly depleted, officials said. Although the United States has significant stockpiles, its munitions do not fit on the British- and French-made planes that have flown the bulk of the missions.

45. Libyan rebel's story shows links to Taliban, Al Qaeda, NATO
(Misleading headline, sad sad tale)

He once lived under the Taliban's protection, met with Osama bin Laden and helped found a group the U.S. has listed as a terrorist organization. He died in a secondhand U.S. military uniform, ambushed by Moammar Kadafi's men as he cleared a road after an airstrike by his new NATO allies.

Aides to Abdul Monem Muktar Mohammed say the Libyan rebel fighter was leading a convoy of 200 cars west of this hotly contested strategic city Friday when a bullet struck him on the right side of the chest. He opened his passenger door and jumped out. A rocket-propelled grenade exploded nearby.

.........

On a recent day, Mohammed sat in an empty villa in Ajdabiya, on a residential street decorated with a pink flower hedge. He had just come back from manning battle positions. Three fighters slept on a couch, cradling their rifles. He fiddled with his phone and wolfed down some boiled chicken and pasta.

He said that, when the fighting is done, he dreamed of returning to his birthplace and being left alone. "I want to hand in my gun and be with my children," he said. Then he walked to his olive-green pickup, followed by his men.

A further 99 Misurata residents have been transported out of the besieged city by Medicins Sans Frontieres.

The group comprised people injured in the continued bombardment of Libya's third largest city - reported to be the last stronghold of anti-Gaddafi forces in the country's west.

Reuters says 64 of those who arrived in the southern Tunisian port of Zarzis overnight -onboard a loosely converted passenger ferry - had serious injuries, and ten patients were in critical condition.

50. Making do and making war
Facing superior firepower on the battlefield, fighters seeking to overthrow Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are left renovating aging, abandoned military hardware.

As the rebels refurbish old tanks and make launching systems from doorbells, they appeal for new weapons.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid, reporting from Benghazi, has more from the rebels' workshop.

51. Amnesty International In Misratah, a city under siege
By Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International’s crisis researcher.

I reached Misratah today after an 18-hour journey by sea. As we approached the port, it appeared that we might have to turn back because the area near the port was coming under heavy rocket fire from Colonel M’uammar al-Gaddafi’s armed forces.

Several journalists were also on board our ship, including reporters from major international media from the US, the UK and France, as well as some freelancers. At last, through these efforts the wider world will come to learn more of what is and has been happening in this besieged port city, home to more than 300,000 people.

As we waited offshore we were alongside other boats, bringing much needed medical and other humanitarian supplies, that were also waiting off the coast until the artillery shelling came to a stop.

Eventually, we docked. But as we did so plumes of smoke were still clearly visible rising above a point where yet another projectile had smashed into the port area. I did not hang around – nor did anyone else from what I could see – to find out what sort of rocket it was or, indeed, whether it was a rocket or a mortar shell.

52. AJE Afternoon update from Brega-Ajdabiya
Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 08:42 AM by Iterate
1:07pm
Residents are fleeing Ajdabiya as Gaddafi troops advance on the western edge of the city, says the AFP news agency. Unarmed rebel supporter Omar Salim Mufta, 27, told the agency:
"Gaddafi's forces approached the city, they bombed the western gate. The sound of the guns are coming closer, that's why many are leaving."

Another civilian, 48-year-old Milud Ghait, appealed for NATO forces to carry out air strikes on the area as about a dozen pickup trucks carrying rebel fighters left town.
"Gaddafi's forces are on the western outskirts of Ajdabiya, but NATO is doing nothing. Where is NATO? What are the French, British and Americans doing?"

1:16pm
As fighting continues for Brega, home to several oil facilities, forces loyal to long time leader Muammar Gaddafi skirt that body of fighting and attack Ajdabiya from the south.

A large sandstorm has prevented NATO aircraft from targeting the troops, alowing them to set up artillery positions without fear of air strikes.

Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna, reporting from just outside Ajdabiya, and Sue Turton in Benghazi, give the latest details on the fighting along Libya's coast.

53. CNN: Troubling reports emerge from the raging battle for Misrata
Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- For all the talk in diplomatic circles this week of finding peace for Libya, one thing remained clear Saturday: The war is raging unabated in Misrata.

In the city under siege from Moammar Gadhafi's forces and mostly inaccessible for journalists, other than those on government-organized tours, residents reported disturbing new developments Saturday.

An opposition council member told CNN that loyalists were using bombs that look like perfume bottles. Photographs suggested they were shells fired from a grenade launcher that either did not explode on impact or were deliberately masked and placed in populated areas.

Either way, they were proving lethal. The council member said Saturday that people have had their limbs blown off and children have been killed.

Complete, with video report...

Posted here for the record. Nothing particularly new in this, but as CNN often does, it tells you everything that happened last week.

55. Rebels Gain Ground in Misrata--WSJ

Source: Wall Street Journal

Rebels Gain Ground in Misrata

By SAM DAGHER

TRIPOLI—Rebels gained new ground in Misrata over the weekend while a military spokesman for the regime denied the use of heavy weapons or cluster munitions there, even as forces loyal to Col. Moammar Gadhafi pounded the embattled city with fresh salvos of rockets and shelled the rebel-held city of Ajdabiya in eastern Libya.

On Sunday government officials in Tripoli canceled a trip for reporters to Misrata, about 125 miles east of the capital, as the sound of intermittent explosions was heard in the city, according to a resident with the rebels reached via an Internet phone connection.

Since early March pro-Gadhafi troops have been trying to fight their way into Misrata's rebel-controlled center, achieving little while inflicting immense suffering on residents who have chosen to remain inside. But on Saturday rebels reclaimed a new patch of land southwest of the city known as Al-Ghayran beyond Tripoli Street, the main frontline in the battle between the two sides, according to a doctor with the rebels.

In the fight for Al-Ghayran rebels were able to destroy three tanks
, said Ayman Abu-Shahma. He said government troops retaliated by firing Grad rockets against several targets around the city including a dairy-products plant, a clinic and a road reserved for container trucks leading to the port. The waterfront is the rebels' only outlet to the outside world. Dr. Abu-Shahma said at least six people were killed, including rebel fighters and a nurse at the clinic in an area known as Zawiyat al-Mahjoub, also southwest of the city.

56. Several stories from the Guardian
Saved from Gaddafi's torturers – by a simple gesture of kindness
When Ali Mufta draped his blanket around the shoulders of a pair of terrified teenage brothers, he thought of it as little more than a touch of kindness in the midst of a situation he describes as "a horror movie". But it was a gesture that saved him from the fate of other prisoners crammed into an underground cell in Sirte, the birthplace of the Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi.

The petrol tanker driver watched horrified as his fellow captives were called out in ones and twos by Gaddafi's soldiers. He listened to their screams and pleas, and saw them return with broken hands and feet, and faces disfigured.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/apr/17/gadaffi-torturers-kindness-sirte

8.27am: France and Britain want to extend air strikes to the logistics and decision centres of Gaddafi's army, rather than start arming Libyan rebels, the French defence minister, Gerard Longuet, said today. Asked if it was time to send weapons to the rebels, he told LCI television:

This is the reason France and Britain want to show our determination, including with strikes on military decision centres in Libya or on logistics depots which today are being spared. Why? Because if we want to avoid civil war ... the force of the other side must be neutralised, and so the strikes we are asking for are aimed at not having to arm the insurgents. Our goal is not to organise a front, it's that Gaddafi's troops go back to their barracks.

Saved from Gaddafi's torturers – by a simple gesture of kindness
Former captive tells of the 'horror movie' violence meted by Libyan soldiers, and how he came to escape a similar fate

Chris McGreal in Benghazi guardian.co.uk, Sunday 17 April 2011 14.34 BST

"They removed each person from the room in turn and they beat him and kicked him. They broke fingers and toes. They destroyed the faces. They came back completely covered in blood," he said. "I saw them kick a wounded rebel soldier until he bled to death. I saw a man who was crawling around on all fours as they kicked and beat him, and still he kept crawling. There wasn't a point of his body that wasn't beaten."

Mufta had no reason to believe his fate would be any different. A month ago, the 33-year-old had volunteered to take food to Ras Lanuf, a rebel-held town under attack from Gaddafi's forces. The aid convoy of food trucks and three ambulances from Benghazi arrived only to discover the Libyan dictator's army was already there.

58. Libya's civil war shrinks Christian communities

(AP) – 3 hours ago

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — With most of his flock having fled Libya's violence, Tripoli's Roman Catholic bishop now focuses on keeping the power struggle between Moammar Gadhafi and anti-government rebels out of his church.

...

Some of his parishioners, especially African migrant workers, have been using his St. Francis Church as a sanctuary, saying they dread going into the streets because they are frequently stopped and harassed by Gadhafi's security forces.

...

Martinelli said his flock of 100,000 in the greater Tripoli area has dwindled to about 5,000. The Greek Orthodox community has shrunk from around 1,000 to fewer than a dozen. The Union Church is down from 1,200 to 250 parishioners.

Some of those who stayed, especially Africans who lack proper papers, said they rarely leave their homes these days because Tripoli is full of checkpoints, part of the clampdown by Gadhafi's forces to prevent anti-government protests.

59. Qaddafi forces shell Ajdabiyah, pound Misratah as stalemate hardens

Source: Christian Science Monitor

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi’s loyalists shelled the key eastern city of Ajdabiyah and fired on the only western rebel stronghold of Misratah as NATO airstrikes hit the capital, Tripoli.

By Kristen Chick, Correspondent / April 17, 2011

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi shelled the strategic eastern city of Ajdabiyah Sunday, a day after rebel forces pushed from that town toward the oil port city of Brega.

Qaddafi’s loyalists also fired on the western city of Misratah, where dozens have been wounded and food supplies are running out, as NATO airstrikes struck the capital, Tripoli. The back-and-forth comes a month after the United Nations authorized the use of force to protect civilians in Libya, as the conflict has settled into what looks like a stalemate.

Reuters reports that Qaddafi’s forces shelled rebels outside Ajdabiyah Sunday, and that some of the opposition forces were fleeing. According to Reuters, the Qaddafi loyalists have bombed the road leading from Ajdabiyah west to Brega, about 50 miles away, repeatedly over past days. On Saturday, the rebel forces had pushed along that road toward Brega and said they controlled the outskirts of the city, while Qaddafi’s forces held the center, Al Jazeera reports. The rebels reached the town after NATO airstrikes, but 6 died and 16 were wounded in the assault.

Meanwhile, Qaddafi’s forces bombed residential areas of Misratah, the rebels’ only major stronghold in the west, for the fourth straight day. It has been cut off from rebel-held territory in the east for weeks, and conditions are reportedly growing worse there, with as many as 700 killed in past weeks and a food shortage growing. Reuters reports that at least six people were killed and 47 wounded in the early morning shelling. Al Jazeera reports that Sunday’s shelling hit food industry facilities, and that the group Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) was able to evacuate about 99 wounded people to Tunisia.

60. Libyan dissident who photographed the death of Yvonne Fletcher speaks out against the Gaddafi regime
Yvonne Fletcher lies wounded in the street, tended to by fellow police officers. She would die in hospital a little over an hour after this photograph was taken, killed by a bullet fired from the Libyan embassy.

Now 27 years to the day since she was murdered - on April 17th 1984 - the Libyan dissident who took this historic picture has spoken of the events leading up to the shooting and its bloody aftermath.

Mohamed Maklouf, who has been living in exile most of his adult life in fear of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's regime, has decided to release the images as testament to the brutalities committed by Gaddafi - not just in his own country, but on British streets.

Last month, he made his first trip back to Libya after 36 years for an emotional reunion with his mother in rebel-held Benghazi. On his return to London, he was moved to make public this remarkable set of photographs taken by him more than a quarter of a century ago.

61. Libyan rebels launch raids

By Phil Moore, AAP

April 17, 2011, 10:19 pm

Libyan rebels said they mounted successful raids on Col. Moammar Gadhafi's troops in the besieged western city of Misrata as loyalist forces pounded them Sunday in the eastern town of Ajdabiya.

Smoke billowed over the center of Misrata, which a witness said was from a destroyed regime tank, as rebels claimed to have taken out several pro-Gadhafi snipers along the port city's main avenue.

Launching attacks from the Zamora district, the rebels said they closed in on snipers based along Tripoli Street and pushed back those based further out in Misrata, their last major bastion in the west of Libya.

In the country's east, Gaddafi's better-armed loyalist forces on Sunday pounded rebels at the western gate of the crossroads town of Ajdabiya with heavy artillery, an AFP correspondent said.

On Saturday at least eight people were killed and 27 wounded in fighting west of Ajdabiya as rocket fire by Gaddafi loyalists struck rebel positions between the eastern town and nearby Brega, hospital officials said.

I'd guess Copper River salmon from Alaska might be tough to get where you are, but in SoCal it comes into the markets for 3-4 weeks each year (and the supermarkets issue advance notices that it's coming soon). It's become something of an annual ritual for me. Yum!

90. From the Atlantic runs though
it's pretty common, sometimes "farmed" off the coast. Usually though it's lightly smoked and eaten at breakfast with the hottest Bavarian horseradish, or poached in a cream sauce, or grilled (thank you Italian immigrants from the 60's who opened restaurants here). I miss my grill. I'm coming back. I can't go on without democrats and hickory.

103. Be prepared when you return...
...we not only have dems, we also have teabaggers. Natural selection doesn't work overnight. :)

We also have good Pacific salmon, preferably sockeye (and Copper River salmon is the cream of the crop).

The restaurant review that accompanied my recipe explains why Copper River salmon is prized:

Each year, for a few weeks in May and June, Neuman is even busier than usual in the kitchen as he and his staff prepare the dozens of daily requests for Copper River Salmon, a wild fish known for its rich, complex flavor. It's at this time of yiear that the great salmon is caught in the headwaters of the Copper River, high above the Gulf of Alaska. The river itself is more than 250 miles long, and the current is strong. Because the native salmon that navigates these waters doesn't eat once it's entered the fresh water, it depends solely on its body fat and natural oils for the energy needed to reach its spawning ground. Therefore, each fish weighs between 30 and 40 pounds, not the 8 to 12 pounds Oregonians are used to seeing in salmon in their local markets.

Copper River salmon meat is bright red-orange in color, with with a flaky texture and moist taste, thanks to its natural oils. To take advantage of these superior traits Neuman keeps preparation to a minimum--basting the fish in a seasoned oil, grilling it and serving it with freshly roasted vegetables.

--Sara Perry, "Two friends discover a recipe for success"
In The Sunday Oregonian (Portland, OR)

And it's always a special treat for me when a certain friend from Alaska shows up for reunions. He always brings a ton of smoked salmon with him--the best I've ever had!

68. France stops all Italian trains carrying north African immigrants

Source: The Telegraph

France on Sunday prevented all trains carrying illegal immigrants entering its borders from Italy.

By Peter Allen, Paris 5:08PM BST 17 Apr 2011

In dramatic scenes in Menton, in south east France, border guards including riot police halted hundreds of mainly North African men who have crossed from Libya and Tunisia.

The trains, on which they travelled and which also contained political activists calling for better rights for immigrants, were attempting to cross from the nearby Italian border station of Ventimiglia.

"Our orders are to cancel all services from Italy," said a spokesman for the French national train operator SNCF.

He said the trains had been stopped on the orders of the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture "until further notice".

...

It was the latest chapter in a bitter diplomatic dispute caused by the arrival of thousands of immigrants in Italy from Arab countries like Tunisia and Libya which have undergone revolutions this year.

69. Libyan rebels claim control over Ajdabiya

Source: Al Jazeera

Anti-government fighters in the eastern town face attacks from Gaddafi's forces as sandstorm prevents Nato air raids.

Last Modified: 17 Apr 2011 15:34

Rebel fighters in Libya say they have captured Ajdabiya, but government forces are reported to be pounding the eastern town as battles rage on for control of the country's coast.

The rebels, seeking to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's long-time ruler, had earlier advanced from Ajdabiya towards the nearby oil port town of Brega.

...

"Once you have weather conditions like this, it means that the Gaddafi's forces are able to move on the highways, able to move very quickly," he said.

"They are able to set up their artillery barrages more precisely, getting their spotters forward. This means they are much more effective in these conditions, because they do not have to worry about any air strikes from above."

Reuters - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi receives a telephone call from South African president Jacob Zuma, state television reports.

No details of when the call took place nor what was said. Zuma headed an African Union (AU) mission to Tripoli last week, but an AU bid to halt the conflict failed.

71. Rights group claims fresh evidence of cluster bombs in Libya

17/04 17:43 CET

With fighting in Misrata intensifying, claims are growing stronger that Libyan forces are using cluster bombs.

The New York based Human Rights Watch says it has confirmed witness accounts from the ground.

Its Communications Director, Emma Daly said: “We’ve talked to several witnesses who claim to have seen other cluster munitions strikes and we have the remnants of what appears to be a cluster munitions strike, including a submunition or bomblet.

72. Local Libyans applaud Ottawa's commitment to war

By NADIA MOHARIB, Calgary Sun

Last Updated: April 16, 2011 4:26pm

About 40 people calling for an end to violence in Libya rallied downtown Saturday, applauding the Harper Tories’ electoral stance on their North African homeland.

...

Salah Elmahmudi said it was “a crucial step” for this country to “support the NATO and no-fly zone.”

Tehart Ekasha lost a friend to the violence and drove in from Edmonton to support fellow Libyans at the rally.

“We are fighting for freedom and people are killed because of that,” she said tears rolling down her cheeks.

“It’s not fair.”

77. Germany aims to use Gaddafi's money to pay for aid
Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 01:35 PM by Iterate
BERLIN, April 17 (Reuters) - The German government is considering transferring 6 billion euros in frozen funds belonging to Muammar Gaddafi's regime to a United Nations escrow account to be dispersed to the Libyan people.

"The United Nations could use it to pay for supplies of humanitarian aid to alleviate the suffering of the population in all of Libya," Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle was quoted by German magazine Der Spiegel as saying in a government document.

Bruederle believes individual nations cannot by law return Gaddafi's frozen funds to the Libyan people directly and therefore wants the European Union to decide on a way to transfer all of Gaddafi's frozen assets in Europe to the U.N.

...

Libya's Planning and Finance Minister Abdulhafid Zlitni told a news conference in Tripoli last Wednesday that $120 billion of Libyan assets had been frozen by foreign banks under sanctions, but the country still had reserves in gold and other assets.

On edit, this kind of pisses me off, mainly because it carries us into an unthinking assumption that somehow it's "Gaddafi's money" or "regime funds" being seized then handed out the the merest passerby in Benghazi. This money belongs to the Libyan people east of Sirte, or those in Misrata, or Zintan just as much as it does to any others.

78. New reports of NATO airstrikes SW of Tripoli and near Sirte
Reuters - NATO warplanes have bombed an area southwest of the capital Tripoli, Libyan state television reports. It later said the alliance had also hit the city of Sirte - Gaddafi's hometown.

Quoting a military spokesman, local television said the bombardment was on the area of Al-Hira, 50km southwest of Tripoli, which had been hit by NATO attacks before.

The later report said Sirte, located 450km east of Tripoli, had also been targeted.

They are targeting munitions storage areas that are around Tripoli and Sirte - a good idea. If Gaddafi does not have the weapons then he cannot hit the rebels.

86. Libya crisis: UK in talks over 'dire' humanitarian need

Source: BBC

17 April 2011 Last updated at 14:28 ET

The UK is to hold "urgent talks" at the United Nations about the "dire" humanitarian crisis affecting residents in western Libya.

...

UK International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell will discuss plans to increase aid and medical supplies and ensure better access during a meeting at the UN in New York, on Monday.

...

Agencies have said there are shortages of critical supplies and attacks targeted against civilians and medical facilities, preventing staff from working.

There is concern medical centres are operating at maximum capacity and some severely injured people cannot leave the city for treatment because of the fighting.

The UN is also said to be worried that there could be outbreaks of water-borne diseases.

92. I don't post the regime's claims of civilian victims of NATO strikes
We've seen too many reports from the international press about their being taken to what are very clearly staged 'funerals' where none of the attendees know the supposed victims...a casket that was opened was found to be empty...and caskets are brought, supposedly for burial, and then taken away again.

It is possible for civilians to be harmed in these strikes, but so far there is no credible evidence of that happening.

87. Trump makes claims on Libya
Source; Financial Times

By Tom Braithwaite in Washington

Published: April 17 2011 19:43 | Last updated: April 17 2011 19:43

For Mitt Romney or even Sarah Palin, it would be a serious gaffe. But Donald Trump’s suggestion that Libya would be a more worthwhile conflict if the US got to keep the country afterwards – or at least its oil – probably did nothing to hurt his chances of winning the White House.

“I’d do one thing,” he told Candy Crowley on CNN. “Either I’d go in and take the oil or I don’t go in at all... in the old days, when you have a war and you win, that nation is yours.”

...

Compared with his frequent airing of the wildly popular belief that Mr Obama might not be born in the US, and therefore not a legitimate president, the CNN interview on Sunday was relatively tame.

Granted there was the business about vanquishing Libya and appropriating its oil, but he had not forgotten the Libyan people. “I’d take the oil,” he said, but “I’d give them plenty so they can live very happily.”

94. Why Gaddafi TV Should Be Stopped
In Rwanda, people were incited through radio broadcasts to go on a killing rampage - “kill all the cockroaches” they were told, referring to fellow Rwandans. In a mere 100 days nearly a million Rwandans had been hacked to death by machetes, their corpses littering the roadside. The world was stunned.

Gaddafi has gone on State TV repeatedly and called protesters rats, dogs and traitors. In various speeches he’s said they are drunk and on pills, working with Al Qaeda, foreign agitators and American invaders coming to steal Libyan oil. He encourages followers to search every alley, invade every home and murder those who oppose him. He pledges himself to show them no mercy.

Saif Gaddafi uses state TV to threaten citizens to give up their demands that Gaddafi step down. He warned in a rambling and ominous speech that the streets would run with blood. “We are not Egypt, we are not Tunisia”. Within days the regime made good on their threats and images of unspeakable atrocities showed up without mercy on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Libya Al Hurra TV (the first ever live stream TV broadcast from Free Libya).

If it weren’t for the 8000+ citizens now believed by the transitional interim government to be dead, State TV might seem laughable. But it’s deadly serious.

95. The dramatic downfall of the Mubarak clan
The first shock for the sons of Egypt's former president when they arrived at Cairo's notorious Tora prison, looking dazed according to witnesses, was having their mobile phones taken away.

Then guards thrust rough regulation uniforms into their soft, manicured hands, and led them away to their cells.

The nation they had lorded over for decades, and allegedly plundered on an epic scale, could hardly believe it was seeing the humiliation of Gamal and Alaa Mubarak.

Few Egyptians were more surprised than Wael Khalil, a pro-democracy activist who had been thrown into Tora prison by the regime of their father, Hosni Mubarak.

"Their arrest is a symbol of the triumph of the revolution and the undoing of the old regime," said Mr Khalil, who during his stay was given just slops to eat and had to sleep on the floor.

The map itself is good, but beyond that it's a reminder that the only areas under Gaddafi "control" are parts of three cities and wherever his army spends the night.

109. Libya Fighting Rages Amid Conflicting Reports on Rebels Fleeing

By Peter S. Green - Apr 17, 2011 3:01 PM PT

Fighting raged around the Libyan cities of Misrata and Ajdabiya amid conflicting reports that rebels trying to oust Muammar Qaddafi were fleeing.

Rebels in pickup trucks mounted with machine guns were running away from Ajdabiya, according to the New York Times and the Associated Press, while Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya television networks said the rebels had halted Qaddafi’s forces at the Western gate of the city. All the news services have correspondents on the scene.

Shelling in Misrata, the main rebel-held city in the west and Libya’s third-largest city, has killed five people and injured 47 since yesterday, Al-Jazeera reported. Qaddafi’s forces have fired rockets and cluster bombs into residential areas, according to the New York Times and Human Rights Watch.

“The rebels don’t have the logistics or organization to move forward with major objectives at this time,” said Andrew Terrill, a Middle East specialist at the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. “Unless we see large scale surrender from Qaddafi loyalists, I don’t see too many cities changing hands.”

Its only lifelines are the sea routes to Benghazi, Tunis, and Malta, from where a steady stream of supplies has been trickling in over the past few weeks.

However, supplies such as food and medicine are running short in Misurata, Libya's third largest city.

Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull and cameraman Craig Pennington, boarded a trawler carrying humanitarian supplies, for a 24-hour voyage to the city, and filed this exclusive report.
