Have You Guys Seen This Housing Bubble Chart ??? (It's Been Updated)
Case Shiller 100 Year Chart (2011 Update)
By Barry Ritholtz - April 13th, 2011, 7:00AM

<snip>

In 2006, just as the Housing market was peaking, the NYT ran this graphic of the 100-year Case Shiller chart. It showed how radically overvalued Housing had become.

Two years later, TBP reader Steve Barry updated that graphic, including the projected Home Price mean reversion. (See versions for 2008, 2009 and 2010).

Its time to update this for 2011. Note the 2009 tax credit wiggle:

Note: This chart has been liberally copied without identifying either the source or author. If you see this elsewhere on the intertubes, you should recognize that it was created by Steve Barry, and is originally published here at TBP.

This chart may be reproduced freely if appropriate authorship/publishing credit is given.

2. Looks like many folks are going to be upside down for
the rest of their lives. What a mess.

4. Think About The Implications Of This Chart...
Why help people renegotiate and stay in their homes if it's never gonna come back to the investment the homeowner imagined...

And...

With all this cheap housing (actual HOUSES) available, the banksters can buy them all up, and be the landlords to the serfs of the nation... meaning all of us.

Hell... normally cheery Suzi Orman was on CNN this morning giving advice as how to adjust to the new "American Dream", which curiously, did NOT involve owning your own home.

3. It's funny to say it, but I'm almost glad I lost my house to foreclosure
It destroyed my credit but saved me probably 50 thousand dollars in losses.

Of course I bought in 2002 and my house value went down the whole time. No idea why that graph says otherwise.

6. This chart makes no sense. I bought a house in 1978 and sold in 1997
for 4.5 times the original price. This was in the Boston area.

7. The chart tracks changes in constant dollars.
Not nominal dollars.
