Missouri bill limits lawsuits, awards against animal agriculture operations

JEFFERSON CITY | Landowners who sue their neighbors over foul agricultural odors could be awarded no more than the total value of their property under legislation passed Thursday by the Missouri legislature.

The bill also bars property owners from suing malodorous neighbors repeatedly for the same nuisance. It now awaits Gov. Jay Nixon’s signature.

Proponents said the measure provided necessary relief for large animal agriculture facilities in rural Missouri hit by numerous lawsuits.

“Out-of-state trial attorneys” have seized on such lawsuits as a steady and lucrative form of income, said Rep. Casey Guernsey, a Bethany Republican and the bill’s sponsor.

1. Interesting
I wonder how many of the lawsuits have been brought by city slickers who moved to the country to enjoy their newfound freedoms and just don't like the smell of cowshit.

What?!?! You mean this is country living? Gag me with a dainty spoon! Pave that godammed thing!

3. Actually most of them are filed by long time rural residents
who have enjoyed a peaceful life in the country and then were invaded by the smells of the new hog farm down the road.

Enjoy your brief stay here. You're making quite an impression. :hi:

2. How many are due to industrial pig farms...
...that nobody ever expected to crop up next to their houses and farms.

4. We all know those poor victimized agriculture facilities needed a break
And after donating as much as they could to state politicians, they got the law that provides them with this relief. Democracy in its best form! :sarcasm:

Seriously, these hog farms are gross. You can smell some from the interstate miles away, even when the windows in your car are closed.
